Recently, a media outlet exposed that multiple brands of diapers such as "Curiosity", "Biba Baby", and "Babycare" on the market contain the toxic substance formamide, which quickly ignited social media. However, the plot underwent a reversal within a few days - the involved brand released a third-party authoritative re examination report showing that "formamide was not detected", and the industry association also pointed out that the original report had flaws in the testing basis and causal inference; At the same time, multiple market regulatory authorities have intervened in independent inspections, and the final results are yet to be officially announced.
This public opinion tug of war has brought an old issue back to the forefront:
When consumers question safety, platforms require self certification, and brands need clarification - whose report can be trusted? Based on what criteria? Who is responsible for testing?
The answer is: A third-party laboratory with CNAS/CMA qualifications, strictly issuing chemical testing reports in accordance with international or agreed methods, with complete and traceable data - this is the most powerful tool for resolving disputes, restoring facts, and maintaining brand reputation.
Formamide (CAS No. 75-12-7) is commonly used as EVA foaming material solvent or foaming aid, and may remain in foam floor mats and some high molecular polymers.
EU REACH regulation: Formamide is listed as an SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern), with a content greater than 0.1% requiring notification; Some member states require EVA parenting products with formamide ≤ 200 mg/kg.
EN 71 ‑ 9 (toy safety organic compound): Clarify the formamide test method and reference limit, applicable to foam toys, floor mats, etc.
Diapers/baby textiles: The current national standard GB/T 28004.1-2021 in China does not have a mandatory limit for formamide, but top brands generally implement restricted substance control and self declaration in accordance with REACH requirements.

1. Establish a restricted substance list
Require suppliers of non-woven fabrics, cores, rubber bands, and packaging films to provide REACH SVHC declarations or reports on formamide, ortho benzene, and other substances.
2. Conduct product conformity verification according to the target market
Export to the EU: REACH+EN 71 series (formamide+ortho benzene+heavy metals)
Export to the United States: CPSIA (ortho benzene/lead), buyers often add formamide declaration
Domestic high-end line: Conduct third-party verification and self declaration in accordance with REACH
3. Properly preserve testing records
When facing public opinion, e-commerce platform spot checks, or consumer doubts, a chemical report issued by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory with complete data is the quickest way for enterprises to self certify and rebuild trust.
