Overvoltage

This experiment simulates the generator output voltage rising above the normal point voltage caused by the failure of the generator regulator, in order to determine whether the functional state of the sample meets the design requirements.

Objective of the experiment
The purpose of this experiment is to simulate the phenomenon of generator output voltage overvoltage caused by the failure of the generator regulator, test the performance of the equipment under overvoltage conditions, and evaluate whether its functional status meets the design requirements. Through experiments, verify the equipment's ability to withstand overvoltage conditions and the effectiveness of its protection mechanism, ensuring its reliability in practical applications.

Experimental Background
In the vehicle electrical system, the function of the generator regulator is to control the output voltage of the generator to maintain it within the normal range (such as 13.5V-14.5V in a 12V system). If the regulator fails, the output voltage of the generator may rise to an abnormal level (such as 16V-18V), causing the following problems:

Equipment damage:

Overvoltage may cause damage to internal components of the equipment.

Functional abnormalities:

Overvoltage may cause unstable operation or functional failure of the equipment.

hidden danger:

Overvoltage may cause fires or other safety accidents.

Therefore, it is necessary to test the performance of the equipment under overvoltage conditions to ensure its reliability in practical applications.

Experimental equipment
Device under Test (DUT): Electrical equipment or system that needs to be tested.

Programmable DC power supply: Simulate generator output voltage overvoltage (such as rising from 14V to 18V).

Voltage meter: monitors the amplitude and duration of overvoltage.

Ammeter: measures the current under overvoltage.

Oscilloscope: monitors the waveform of overvoltage and the working status of equipment.

Load simulator: Simulate the load situation of the device in actual operation.

Protective devices (such as TVS diodes, overvoltage protection circuits): used to verify the overvoltage protection mechanism of the equipment.

Experimental Procedure
Device connection:

Connect the DUT to a programmable DC power supply.

Connect an ammeter in series and a voltmeter in parallel in a circuit to monitor current and voltage.

Connect the oscilloscope to monitor the waveform of overvoltage and the working status of the equipment.

Connect the load simulator to simulate the load of the device in actual operation.

Initial testing:

Under normal operating conditions, record the working status of the DUT, including voltage, current, and functional performance.

Overvoltage simulation:

Use a programmable DC power supply to simulate generator output voltage overvoltage (such as slowly increasing from 14V to 18V for a few seconds to minutes).

Record the voltage, current, and operating status of the DUT under overvoltage.

Observe whether there are any abnormalities in the equipment, such as functional failure, damage, etc.

Protection mechanism verification:

If the DUT has overvoltage protection mechanism (such as TVS diode, overvoltage protection circuit), verify whether it works properly under overvoltage.

Record the action of the protective device (such as whether the TVS diode is conducting).

Recovery testing:

Restore normal power supply voltage and check if the equipment can resume normal operation.

Record the working status of the device after restoring normal power supply.

Multiple tests:

Repeat the test under different overvoltage conditions (such as different amplitudes and durations) to evaluate the performance of the equipment.

Data analysis:

Compare test data under different overvoltage conditions and analyze the performance of the equipment.

Evaluate whether the overvoltage protection mechanism of the equipment is effective.

Experimental precautions
safety first:

Overvoltage may cause damage to equipment, and protective measures should be taken to avoid equipment damage.

Ensure good ventilation in the experimental environment to avoid equipment overheating and causing fires.

Gradually adjust parameters:

When simulating overvoltage, the voltage amplitude and duration should be gradually adjusted to avoid equipment damage caused by momentary high voltage.

Real-time monitoring

During the experiment, real-time monitoring of voltage, current, and equipment status is required to promptly detect any abnormalities.

Protector:

If the DUT does not have built-in overvoltage protection, it is recommended to add external protection devices (such as TVS diodes) in the experiment to prevent equipment damage.

Experimental results and conclusions
Experimental results:

Record the performance of the equipment under different overvoltage conditions, including whether it is damaged, whether the protective device is activated, etc.

Record the working status of the device after restoring normal power supply.

Conclusion:

Evaluate the tolerance of the equipment under overvoltage conditions and the effectiveness of the protection mechanism.

If the equipment is damaged, analyze the cause of the damage and provide improvement suggestions.

If the device has an effective overvoltage protection mechanism, confirm that it meets the design requirements.

experiment report
The experimental report should include the following contents:

Experimental objective: Briefly describe the objectives of the experiment.

Experimental equipment: List all the equipment used and their specifications.

Experimental steps: Detailed description of the experimental operation process.

Experimental data: Record all test data, including charts and waveforms.

Data analysis: Analyze experimental data to draw conclusions.

Conclusion and Suggestions: Summarize the experimental results and propose improvement suggestions.

Appendix: Typical Parameters of Overvoltage
Overvoltage amplitude:

12V system: from 14V to 16V-18V.

24V system: from 28V to 32V-36V.

Duration of overvoltage:

A few seconds to a few minutes (such as 10s, 30s, 60s).

Through this experiment, the performance of the equipment under overvoltage conditions can be verified, ensuring its normal operation or effective protection in practical applications.
