free fall test

A test in which packaging is dropped onto a hard, flat horizontal surface and reaches a specified height to evaluate its ability to withstand vertical vibrations and its protection

Objective of the experiment

The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the ability of packaging to withstand vertical impacts and its protective effect on the contents by freely dropping it from a specified height onto a hard, flat horizontal surface. Through experiments, verify the performance of the packaging under drop conditions, ensuring that it can effectively protect the contents during actual transportation and handling.

Experimental Background

During logistics and transportation, packaging may experience unexpected situations such as drops, collisions, etc., such as:

Loading and unloading process: such as manual handling and falling during mechanical operation.

Transportation process: Falling caused by vehicle bumps or unstable stacking.

These drops may cause damage to the packaging or contents, therefore it is necessary to test the performance of the packaging under drop conditions.

Experimental equipment

Drop testing machine: used to freely drop packaging from a specified height.

A hard, flat horizontal surface, such as a steel plate or concrete floor.

Weighing equipment: measures the weight of packaging materials.

Measuring tools: such as tape measures and calipers, used to measure the size and drop height of packaging materials.

Environmental simulation equipment (optional): Simulate different environmental conditions (such as temperature, humidity).

Experimental Procedure

Preparation work:

Check the packaging and its contents to ensure they are in good condition.

Record the weight, size, and initial state of the contents of the packaging.

Device settings:

Fix the packaging on the drop testing machine to ensure that it can fall freely.

Set the drop height (such as 0.5m, 1m, 1.5m) and choose according to the possible situations encountered during actual transportation and handling.

Drop test:

Drop the packaging freely from the specified height onto a hard, flat horizontal surface.

Record the impact data and packaging status during the fall process.

Functional status verification:

After the drop test, check whether the packaging is damaged (such as cracking, deformation, etc.).

Check whether the contents have been affected by falling (such as damage, functional failure, etc.).

Multiple tests:

Repeat the test under different drop heights and different drop surfaces (such as corners, edges, and surfaces) to evaluate the performance of the packaging.

Data analysis:

Compare test data under different drop conditions and analyze the performance of packaging.

Evaluate the impact resistance of the packaging and the protective effect of the contents.

Experimental precautions

safety first:

The drop test may cause damage to the packaging and contents, and protective measures should be taken.

Ensure good ventilation in the experimental environment to avoid equipment overheating and causing fires.

Gradually adjust parameters:

When adjusting the drop height, it should be gradually adjusted to avoid damage to the packaging caused by sudden high impact.

Real-time monitoring

Real time monitoring of impact data and packaging status is required during the experimental process to promptly detect any abnormalities.

Environmental simulation (optional):

If it is necessary to test the performance of packaging under different environmental conditions, environmental simulation equipment can be used to simulate low temperature, high temperature, or high humidity environments.

Experimental results and conclusions

Experimental results:

Record the performance of packaging materials under different drop conditions, including whether they are damaged and whether the contents are damaged.

Record the impact data and packaging status during the fall process.

Conclusion:

Evaluate the impact resistance of the packaging under drop conditions and confirm whether it meets the design requirements.

If the packaging or contents are damaged, analyze the reasons and provide improvement suggestions.

If the packaging has effective impact resistance, confirm that it meets the design requirements.

experiment report

The experimental report should include the following contents:

Experimental objective: Briefly describe the objectives of the experiment.

Experimental equipment: List all the equipment used and their specifications.

Experimental steps: Detailed description of the experimental operation process.

Experimental data: Record all test data, including charts and waveforms.

Data analysis: Analyze experimental data to draw conclusions.

Conclusion and Suggestions: Summarize the experimental results and propose improvement suggestions.

Appendix: Typical Parameters of Free Drop Test

Drop height:

The common height range is 0.5m-1.5m.

Falling surface:

Angle, edge, and surface.

Number of drops:

Usually once or multiple times (such as 3 or 5 times).

Through this experiment, the performance of the packaging under drop conditions can be verified, ensuring that it can effectively protect the contents during actual transportation and handling.
