Component anomaly testing

After experiencing a single anomaly or malfunction, the equipment shall not present any danger in the standard sense

Component anomaly testing is a critical test to evaluate the safety and reliability of equipment under a single fault condition, ensuring that the equipment does not pose a danger to users, the environment, or other equipment in the event of an anomaly. The following are the key elements and protective measures for component abnormality testing:

1. Test objectives
Safety: Ensure that the equipment does not pose risks such as fire, electric shock, explosion, etc. under a single fault condition.

Reliability: Ensure that the equipment can still operate partially or completely normally in abnormal situations, or shut down safely.

Compliant with standards: Meet relevant safety standards and regulatory requirements.

2. Test type
Short circuit test: Simulate component short circuits and check whether the equipment is overcurrent protected or safely shut down.

Open circuit test: Simulate component open circuit, check whether the equipment can detect faults and take safety measures.

Overvoltage test: Simulate high input voltage and check if the device has overvoltage protection function.

Overcurrent test: Simulate abnormal current and check if the equipment has overcurrent protection function.

Overheating test: Simulate component overheating and check if the equipment has temperature protection function.

Reverse voltage test: Simulate power supply reverse connection and check if the equipment has reverse connection protection function.

3. Protective design
Redundancy design: Key circuits or components are designed with redundancy to ensure that a single fault will not cause system failure.

Protection circuit:

Overvoltage protection (such as TVS diodes, voltage regulators).

Overcurrent protection (such as fuses, PTC self recovery fuses).

Overheating protection (such as temperature sensors, thermal fuses).

Fault detection: Design a fault detection mechanism to promptly identify anomalies and take safety measures (such as power outages and alarms).

Isolation design: Isolation design (such as optocoupler and transformer isolation) is used between high-risk circuits and low-risk circuits.

4. Testing equipment
Programmable power supply: Simulate abnormal voltage or current conditions.

Electronic load: Simulate abnormal load.

Temperature tester: monitors temperature changes of components.

Data logger: records parameters such as voltage, current, temperature, etc. during the testing process.

Fault injection equipment: Simulate component short circuits, open circuits, and other faults.

5. Testing process
Preparation: Determine the test type, fault conditions, and test parameters.

Fault injection: Simulate the abnormality of a single component (such as short circuit, open circuit, overvoltage, etc.).

Monitoring: Record the response of equipment under abnormal conditions (such as voltage, current, temperature, status).

Inspection: Evaluate whether the equipment meets safety requirements (such as no danger, automatic protection, safe shutdown).

Analysis: Optimize design or improve protective measures based on test results.

6. Improvement measures
Add protection circuit: Add or optimize protection circuit based on test results.

Optimization design: Improve circuit design to reduce the impact of a single fault.

Component selection: Choose components with higher reliability or higher rated values.

Software protection: Fault detection and protection (such as overvoltage shutdown and overcurrent limitation) are implemented through software.

7. Common standards
IEC 61000-4: Electromagnetic compatibility testing standard, including abnormal condition testing.

UL 60950-1: Information Technology Equipment Safety Standard.

IEC 62368-1: Safety standards for audio and video, information technology, and communication equipment.

GB 4943.1: China Information Technology Equipment Security Standards.

8. Precautions
Single fault principle: Simulate only one component abnormality during each test to ensure the pertinence of the test results.

Hazard assessment: During the testing process, it is necessary to evaluate whether the equipment may cause hazards such as fire, electric shock, and explosion.

User safety: Ensure that the device does not cause harm to the user under abnormal conditions.

Environmental safety: Ensure that equipment does not cause pollution or damage to the environment under abnormal conditions.

By conducting abnormal component testing, the safety and reliability of the equipment can be effectively improved, ensuring that it will not pose a standard danger under a single fault condition.
