The hundred grid test is the most common method for testing the adhesion of paint films. According to international standards, it can be divided into six levels, with units of 0B, 1B, 2B, 3B, 4B, and 5B. The higher the level, the stricter the requirements. If the customer requests 5B, it means that the paint film cannot have any peeling.
Test steps
The hundred grid test generally involves using a hundred grid knife to cut 10 x 10 small grids of 1mm x 1mm on the surface of the test sample. When cutting with the hundred grid knife, it should be done until the substrate is exposed, not just on the surface of the paint film, otherwise the test results will be inaccurate and the test purpose will not be achieved.
After drawing a hundred grids, use a soft bristled brush to gently sweep along each diagonal of the grid a few times in the backward direction, and then a few times in the forward direction to remove debris and ensure more accurate experimental results.
Then firmly stick the small grid being tested with 3M hundred grid tape, and use your fingers to press down on the tape or use an eraser to vigorously wipe the tape to increase the contact area and force between the tape and the tested area. Then grab one end of the tape with your hand and quickly pull off the adhesive paper in the vertical direction (90 °) to observe the peeling phenomenon of the coating on the material. The tape pulling test is usually conducted 2-3 times at the same position.
After completing the above steps, use a handheld magnifying glass with a magnification of 2 or 3 times to observe the peeling of the paint film.
