Dimethyl fumarate DMF

The European Commission has passed a draft requiring Member States to ensure that products containing the biocidal agent dimethyl fumarate are not placed on the market or sold (2009/251/EC), which prohibits the placement or sale of products containing dimethyl fumarate on the market after May 1, 2009.

Instruction requirements

After May 1, 2009, products containing dimethyl fumarate are prohibited from being put on the market or sold on the market. Products containing dimethyl fumarate that have already been put on the market or sold on the market should be recalled;

The content of dimethyl fumarate in the product or product parts should not exceed 0.1 mg/kg (0.1 ppm);

Do not use desiccants or mold inhibitors containing dimethyl fumarate in small bags within the product and packaging.

New instruction background

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is a highly efficient and low toxicity antifungal agent that emerged internationally in the 1980s. It is widely used in China's furniture and footwear industries. When used in excess of normal levels, it may cause skin allergies, rashes, or burns in consumers. Last year, consumer allergy incidents occurred in countries such as France, Poland, Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. After the publication of 2009/251/EC, the ban on dimethyl fumarate was extended from France, Spain, and Belgium to the entire European Union, which will become another technical barrier restricting China's leather goods processing and export enterprises such as shoes, bags, and sofas.

About Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF)

Dimethyl fumarate is mostly packaged in small bags fixed inside furniture or added to shoe boxes. So as to keep the product dry and moisture-proof, and prevent mold growth. However, consumers who come into contact with the product have also been harmed. Dimethyl fumarate penetrates into consumers' skin through clothing, causing skin contact dermatitis pain, including itching, irritation, redness, and burns; In some cases, there have also been reports of acute respiratory diseases. Dermatitis is particularly difficult to treat. Therefore, the presence of dimethyl

fumarate becomes a serious danger.

Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF) is a chemical substance commonly used as a mold inhibitor and desiccant. Due to its potential allergenicity and health hazards, DMF is strictly restricted in consumer products in many countries and regions. The following is a detailed explanation about DMF:

The hazards of DMF
DMF is a potent allergenic substance that may cause harm to the human body through skin contact or inhalation, including:

Skin irritation: may cause contact dermatitis, redness, itching, etc.

Respiratory irritation: Inhaling DMF may cause respiratory discomfort.

Long term health effects: May cause damage to organs such as the liver and kidneys.

Source of DMF
DMF typically originates from the following pathways:

Mold inhibitor: used to prevent mold growth in leather, textiles, furniture, and other products.

Desiccant: Used for moisture absorption and prevention.

Industrial products: such as coatings, adhesives, and plastic products.

Limit requirements for DMF
Different countries and regions have different limit requirements for DMF. The following are common limit requirements:

1. European Union
REACH regulation:

The DMF content in consumer goods shall not exceed 0.1 mg/kg (0.1 ppm).

EU Directive 2009/251/EC:

Prohibit the use of DMF in consumer goods.

2. China
GB/T 27717-2011:

The DMF content in textiles shall not exceed 0.1 mg/kg.

3. United States
CPSIA:

Although DMF is not explicitly restricted, consumer products are required not to contain harmful substances.

Scope of application for DMF detection
DMF testing is applicable to the following products and materials:

Textiles: such as clothing and footwear.

Leather products: such as sofas and handbags.

Furniture: such as chairs, tables.

Toys: such as plush toys, plastic toys.

Packaging materials: such as desiccants and mold inhibitors.

Standards and methods for DMF detection
DMF detection usually adopts the following standards and methods:

1. Testing standards
EU EN 16711-2:

Method for detecting DMF in textiles.

China GB/T 27717-2011:

Method for detecting DMF in textiles.

2. Testing methods
Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS):

Separate DMF by gas chromatography and detect its content by mass spectrometry.

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC):

DMF was separated by liquid chromatography and its content was detected by UV detector.

The process of DMF detection
Sample preparation:

Prepare representative samples according to testing requirements.

Extract DMF:

Extract DMF from the sample using a solvent such as methanol.

Purification sample:

Purification of extraction solution by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and other methods.

Instrument analysis:

Use GC-MS or HPLC to detect DMF content.

Result analysis:

Based on the test results, determine whether the sample meets the limit requirements.

How to reduce DMF content
Material selection:

Choose raw materials without DMF.

production process

Optimize production processes and reduce the use of DMF.

Alternative substances:

Use environmentally friendly alternative substances (such as natural mold inhibitors).

Quality Control:

Regularly conduct DMF testing on products to ensure compliance with limit requirements.

summary
DMF is a harmful chemical substance widely used as a mold inhibitor and desiccant. Due to its potential allergenicity and health hazards, DMF is strictly restricted in consumer products in many countries and regions. Export products need to undergo DMF testing according to the requirements of the target market to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
