Dioxin detection

Dioxins are two major types of organic compounds with similar structures and properties, containing numerous similar or isomers, namely polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). Among them, PCDDs have 75 isomers and PCDFs have 135 isomers, with 17 of them receiving the most attention. Many industries related to chlorine, such as waste incineration, chemical industry, pesticide production, pulp bleaching, etc., may produce dioxins. Dioxins are persistent organic pollutants that persist and continuously accumulate in the environment. Once ingested into living organisms, it is difficult to decompose or excrete, and it will be continuously transmitted and accumulated along the food chain, ultimately posing a threat to human health.

Our capabilities
We provide dioxin detection services to global clients using different analytical methods, including EU methods, US Environmental Protection Agency methods, Japanese industrial standard methods, etc.

We can analyze dioxins in the following samples:
1. Agricultural products and food
Feed, additives, eggs, fish, meat, dairy products, oils and fats, etc.
2. Environmental samples
Waste gas, fly ash and bottom ash, chemicals, soil, waste, water, etc.

Dioxins are a class of highly toxic persistent organic pollutants (POPs) primarily derived from industrial processes, waste incineration, and chemical production. Due to its extremely low concentration, which can cause serious harm to the environment and human health, the detection of dioxins is crucial.

detection method

Sample pre-treatment:

Extraction: Use organic solvents (such as toluene, dichloromethane) to extract dioxins from environmental samples (such as soil, water, air) or biological samples (such as blood, adipose tissue).

Purification: Purification is carried out through multi-layer silica gel columns, alumina columns, or activated carbon columns to remove interfering substances.

Concentrate: Concentrate the extract to an appropriate volume to improve detection sensitivity.

Analysis method:

High Resolution Gas Chromatography High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRGC-HRMS): The most commonly used method, with high sensitivity and selectivity, can accurately determine the same and isomers of dioxins.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS): suitable for preliminary screening and quantitative analysis.

Biological detection methods, such as CALUX (chemical activated luciferase gene expression) method, are used for rapid screening and semi quantitative analysis.

detection steps
Sample collection: Collect environmental or biological samples according to the testing purpose.

Extraction: Use appropriate solvents to extract the target compound.

Purification: Remove interfering substances through column chromatography or other purification methods.

Concentrate: Concentrate the extract to an appropriate volume.

Instrument analysis: Use HRGC-HRMS or GC-MS for qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Data processing: Calculate the concentration of dioxins in the sample using standard curves.

Precautions
Standard: Use high-purity dioxin standard for calibration.

Blank control: Ensure no contamination during the experimental process.

Repeated experiments: Ensure the accuracy and reliability of the results.

Laboratory conditions: Due to the high toxicity of dioxins, experimental operations should be conducted in a well ventilated laboratory and appropriate protective measures should be taken.

Application field
Environmental monitoring: detecting dioxin pollution in air, water, and soil.

Food safety: Testing for dioxin residues in food and feed.

Biological monitoring: Evaluating the accumulation of dioxins in human and animal bodies.

Industrial emissions: Monitor the emission of dioxins in industrial processes.

Regulations and Standards
International: According to the Stockholm Convention, countries need to take measures to reduce and eliminate dioxin emissions.

The United States: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established testing and emission standards for dioxins.

EU: The European Commission has established strict dioxin limit standards, especially in food and feed.

Conclusion
Dioxin detection is an important part of environmental monitoring and public health protection. Through highly sensitive analysis methods and strict quality control, the pollution level of dioxins can be effectively monitored and evaluated, providing scientific basis for formulating pollution prevention and control measures.
