Needle-flame

Simulating the fire hazard of small flames caused by fault conditions inside the lighting fixture

Needle Flame Test is an experimental method for evaluating the fire resistance of materials or components under low flame conditions. It simulates the situation where small flames are generated inside the lamp due to faults such as short circuits, overheating, etc., and evaluates whether the material can resist the spread of flames or cause fires. The following is a detailed explanation of needle flame testing:

Test Principle
Use a needle shaped flame of a specific size (usually 12mm high) to burn the sample and simulate the small flame generated under fault conditions. Evaluate the anti ignition performance of the sample by observing whether it is ignited, combustion time, flame spread, etc.

Test Standard
Common needle flame testing standards include:

IEC 60695-11-5: International Electrotechnical Commission standard, applicable to fire hazard assessment of electronic and electrical products.

GB/T 5169.5: Chinese National Standard, equivalent to IEC 60695-11-5.

UL 746A: Underwriters Laboratories standard for evaluating the flammability of plastic materials.

test equipment
Needle flame burner:

Generate needle shaped flames of standard size (flame height typically 12mm).

Sample fixture:

Fix the sample to ensure it is in the correct position and angle.

Timer:

Record the burning time.

Bottom layer:

Place a standard substrate (such as silk paper) underneath the sample to evaluate whether the drips have ignited.

Test steps
Sample preparation:

Prepare standard sized samples to ensure they represent actual usage conditions.

The sample needs to be pre treated under standard temperature and humidity conditions.

Installation sample:

Fix the sample on the fixture and ensure that it is in the required position for testing (such as horizontal or vertical).

Apply flame:

Use a needle flame burner to apply a flame to the sample, with a flame height of 12mm and a specified burning time (such as 10 seconds, 30 seconds, etc.).

Observation record:

Observe whether the sample ignites, burning time, flame spread, and whether droplets ignite the underlying layer.

Record combustion behavior and related data.

Termination conditions:

When the combustion time of the sample exceeds the specified value or the flame spreads to a specific area, the test is terminated.

result evaluation
According to the test results, evaluating the fire resistance performance of materials usually includes the following indicators:

Burning time: The burning time of the sample after removing the flame.

Flame spread: Whether the flame spreads to other parts of the sample or ignites the underlying layer.

Dripping: Does the dripping ignite the underlying layer.

Test points
Flame height: Ensure that the flame height is 12mm, which meets the standard requirements.

Burning time: Strictly control the burning time to avoid being too long or too short.

Environmental control: Testing should be conducted under standard temperature and humidity conditions.

Safety protection: Harmful gases may be generated during the testing process, and ventilation equipment is required.

application
Lamp industry: Evaluate the fire resistance performance of lamp shells, internal insulation materials, etc. under low flame conditions.

Electronic and electrical industry: testing the fire hazard of components such as circuit boards, connectors, switches, etc.

Automotive industry: Evaluating the fire resistance performance of materials in automotive electrical systems.

Through needle flame testing, the fire hazard of materials or components under low flame conditions can be effectively evaluated, providing a basis for product design and safety certification.
