Pin discharge test

An appliance intended to be connected to a power source through a plug should have a structure that prevents electric shock hazards due to overcharged capacitors when touching the pins of the plug during normal use.

Pin discharge test is an important safety test for appliances connected to a power source through a plug, aimed at ensuring that when the user touches the pin of the plug during normal use, there is no risk of electric shock due to residual charge in the internal capacitor of the appliance. The following are the key points of pin discharge testing:

1. Test purpose

Evaluate the discharge performance of internal capacitors in the appliance after power failure.

Ensure that users do not experience electric shock due to residual charge in the capacitor when touching the plug pins.

2. Scope of application

Suitable for all appliances connected to a power source through a plug, especially devices containing capacitors inside (such as switch power supplies, motor drive circuits, etc.).

3. Testing standards

Pin discharge testing is usually conducted according to the following standards:

IEC 60335-1: Safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances.

IEC 60950-1: Safety requirements for information technology equipment.

UL 60950-1: Safety Standard for Information Technology Equipment.

The specific standards may vary depending on the product type and application field.

4. Testing methods

Testing equipment: Use a high impedance voltmeter or specialized discharge tester.

Test steps:

Connect the appliance to a rated voltage power source and make it work properly.

Disconnect the power supply and immediately measure the voltage between the plug pins.

Record the voltage changes over time until the voltage drops below the safe limit.

Test conditions:

The test should be conducted immediately after the appliance is powered off.

The testing environment should meet the standard requirements (such as temperature, humidity, etc.).

5. Qualification assessment

After power failure, the voltage between the plug pins should drop below the safety limit within the specified time. The usual requirements are as follows:

Voltage limit: Within 1 second after power failure, the voltage between pins should not exceed 34V (peak) or 60V (DC).

Energy limit: After power failure, the residual energy between pins should not exceed 0.5J (joules).

If the test results meet the above requirements, it is judged as qualified.

6. Influencing factors

Capacitor capacity: The larger the capacity of the internal capacitor of the appliance, the longer the discharge time may be.

Discharge circuit design: Have effective discharge circuits (such as discharge resistors) been designed to accelerate capacitor discharge.

Power outage time: The test should be conducted immediately after the power outage to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results.

7. Precautions

Before testing, ensure that the equipment is in normal working condition.

The testing instrument should have a sufficiently high input impedance to avoid affecting the measurement results.

The test results should be comprehensively evaluated based on specific application scenarios.

Summary: Pin discharge testing is an important means of ensuring the safety of appliances connected to a power source through a plug. By evaluating the voltage and residual energy between pins after a power outage, it ensures that users will not be electrocuted by residual charges on capacitors when touching the pins.
