Mechanical hazard testing

The placement or covering of moving parts of equipment should provide sufficient protection against personal injury during normal use, and should take into account both the use and operation of the equipment as much as possible. Protective shells, shields, and similar components should be non removable parts and have sufficient mechanical strength. The accidental reconnection of self resetting thermal circuit breakers and overcurrent protection devices should not cause danger.

Mechanical hazard testing is an important safety test for moving parts of equipment and their protective measures, aimed at ensuring that the equipment provides sufficient mechanical protection to users during normal use and avoids personal injury. The following are the key points of mechanical hazard testing:

1. Test purpose

Evaluate whether the protective design of the moving parts of the equipment is reasonable.

Ensure that protective shells, shields, and other components have sufficient mechanical strength and will not be accidentally disassembled during normal use.

Prevent accidental reconnection of self resetting thermal circuit breakers and overcurrent protection devices, which could pose a danger.

2. Scope of testing

Moving parts: such as fan blades, cutting tools, drive belts, etc.

Protective shell: a shell or protective cover used to cover moving parts.

Self resetting protection devices: such as self resetting thermal circuit breakers, overcurrent protection devices, etc.

3. Testing standards

Mechanical hazard testing is usually conducted according to the following standards:

IEC 60335-1: Safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances.

IEC 61010-1: Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control and laboratory use.

UL 60745-1: Safety Standard for Handheld Electric Tools.

The specific standards may vary depending on the product type and application field.

4. Testing methods

Protective testing of moving parts:

Check whether the placement or covering of moving parts is reasonable, ensuring that users cannot directly contact dangerous moving parts.

Use standard test indicators (such as Type B test indicators in IEC 61032) to attempt to contact moving parts and verify the effectiveness of protective measures.

Protective shell strength test:

Apply a specified force (such as 30N or 50N) to the protective casing for a certain period of time (such as 5 seconds).

Check if the casing is deformed, cracked, or detached.

Self resetting protection device test:

After simulating the action of the protective device, check if it will accidentally reset and cause danger.

Ensure that the protective device does not automatically reset before troubleshooting.

5. Qualification assessment

Protection of moving parts:

Users should not have direct access to dangerous moving parts.

Testing should not touch moving parts.

Protective casing:

The shell should have sufficient mechanical strength and not deform, break or detach due to applied force.

The shell should be a non removable component unless it can be disassembled using tools.

Self resetting protection device:

The protective device should not automatically reset without troubleshooting.

The reset operation should be clear and require active user intervention.

6. Influencing factors

Protective design: Whether the design of the protective shell or cover is reasonable.

Material strength: Whether the material of the shell or protective cover has sufficient mechanical strength.

Installation method: Whether the installation of the shell or protective cover is firm and not easy to disassemble.

7. Precautions

Before testing, ensure that the equipment is in normal working condition.

The test results should be comprehensively evaluated based on specific application scenarios.

For self resetting protection devices, special attention should be paid to the safety of their reset mechanism.

Summary: Mechanical hazard testing is an important means of ensuring that equipment provides sufficient mechanical protection to users during normal use. By evaluating the protective design of moving parts, the strength of protective enclosures, and the safety of self resetting protective devices, it ensures that equipment will not cause mechanical injury to users during use.
