Mechanical testing - Drum drop test

Roller drop test is a testing method used to evaluate the durability and reliability of products under mechanical stresses such as repeated drops, collisions, and rolling. It is mainly used to simulate the impact and vibration environment that products may encounter during transportation, handling, or use. The following is a detailed introduction to the drum drop test:

1. Test purpose
Evaluate product durability: Test the performance of the product under repeated drops and collisions.

Identify design defects: discover weak points in the structure, materials, or assembly of the product.

Simulate actual usage environment: Simulate the mechanical impacts that a product may experience during transportation, handling, or use.

Improve product quality: Optimize product design and enhance reliability through test results.

2. Testing principle
The drum drop test involves placing the product into a rotating drum, which is usually equipped with baffles or protrusions on the inner wall of the drum, allowing the product to continuously fall, collide, and roll during the drum rotation process, thereby simulating mechanical impacts during actual use or transportation.

3. Testing conditions
Drum size: Select the appropriate drum diameter and length based on product size and testing standards.

Drum speed: usually 5 rpm to 30 rpm, the specific speed is set according to the testing requirements.

Testing time: Depending on the product type and testing standards, the testing time is usually a few minutes to several hours.

Drop height: determined by the diameter and speed of the drum, simulating different impact strengths.

Environmental conditions: Some tests may be conducted under specific temperature and humidity conditions to simulate more complex environments.

4. Testing equipment
Drum drop testing machine: including drum, driving device, control system, etc.

Monitoring system: used to record the status and performance changes of products during the testing process.

Sample fixing device: Ensure that the product does not accidentally fly out or damage the equipment during the testing process.

5. Testing steps
Sample preparation: Install or place the product to be tested in the drum.

Initial inspection: Record the appearance, functionality, and performance status of the product.

Set parameters: Set parameters such as drum speed and testing time according to testing standards or customer requirements.

Start testing: Start the drum and repeatedly drop, collide, and roll the product inside the drum.

Intermediate testing: Regularly stop testing, check product status, and record data.

End of Test: After completing the test, conduct the final inspection and record the results.

6. Application Fields
Consumer electronics products: such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, etc.

Household appliances: such as remote controls, small appliances, etc.

Automotive components: such as sensors, controllers, etc.

Packaging testing: Evaluating the protective performance of product packaging during transportation.

Military products: such as communication equipment, portable instruments, etc.

7. Relevant standards
International standards: such as IEC 60068-2-32 (Environmental Testing Part 2: Test Methods Test Ed: Free Drop).

National standards: such as GB/T 2423.8 (Environmental testing for electrical and electronic products - Part 2: Test methods - Test Ed: Free fall).

Industry standards: such as MIL-STD-810 (Military Equipment Environmental Testing Standard).

8. Precautions
Sample fixation: Ensure that the product can fall and collide freely inside the drum without damaging the equipment.

Parameter setting: Reasonably set the drum speed and testing time based on product characteristics and testing standards.

Data recording: Detailed recording of the product status during the testing process, including changes in appearance, functionality, and performance.

Security protection: Ensure that there are sufficient security measures around the testing equipment to prevent accidents from occurring.

9. Analysis of Test Results
Appearance inspection: Check whether the product shell, connectors, etc. are damaged or deformed.

Functional testing: Testing whether the product's functionality is normal after testing.

Performance evaluation: Evaluate whether the product performance meets the design requirements.

Fault analysis: Analyze the faults that occur during testing and provide improvement suggestions.

Through the roller drop test, the reliability of the product under repeated mechanical impacts can be comprehensively evaluated, helping to improve design and enhance product quality, ensuring that it can withstand various mechanical stresses during transportation and use.
