Waterproof testing

According to different levels of IPX1~X9, test the waterproof structure of the sample to see if there is water ingress and the impact caused by water ingress

Waterproof testing is a key test to evaluate the waterproof performance of product casings, and the testing methods and requirements vary depending on the IP protection level (IPX1~IPX9). The following are the testing steps and evaluation points:

1. Test preparation
Sample selection: Select representative product samples for testing.

Testing equipment: Prepare corresponding testing equipment according to the IP level, such as drip devices, sprinkler devices, immersion tanks, etc.

Standard basis: Refer to IEC 60529 standard to clarify the specific requirements for different IP levels.

2. Definition of IPX1~IPX9 levels
IPX1: To prevent vertical dripping, dripping in the vertical direction should not enter the casing.

IPX2: To prevent tilting and dripping, dripping should not enter when the shell is tilted at 15 degrees.

IPX3: To prevent water spraying, water sprayed at a 60 ° angle to the vertical should not enter.

IPX4: To prevent splashing, water should not enter from any direction.

IPX5: To prevent water spray, water should not enter from any direction.

IPX6: To prevent strong water jets, water jets from any direction should not enter.

IPX7: To prevent short-term immersion, water should not enter after soaking in 1 meter deep water for 30 minutes.

IPX8: To prevent continuous immersion, water should not enter the designated depth and time of immersion.

IPX9: To prevent high temperature and high pressure water spraying, water should not enter when subjected to high temperature and high pressure water spraying.

3. Testing steps
IPX1 test
Testing equipment: drip device.

Test method: Place the sample in the normal position and drip vertically for 10 minutes.

Judgment criteria: There should be no water droplets entering the interior.

IPX2 test
Testing equipment: drip device.

Test method: Tilt the sample at 15 ° and drip water for 10 minutes.

Judgment criteria: There should be no water droplets entering the interior.

IPX3 test
Testing equipment: swing pipe water spray device.

Test method: Place the sample in the center of the pendulum tube and spray water for 10 minutes.

Judgment criteria: There should be no water entering the interior.

IPX4 test
Testing equipment: Water spray device.

Test method: Spray water from any direction for 10 minutes.

Judgment criteria: There should be no water entering the interior.

IPX5 test
Testing equipment: nozzle (6.3mm diameter).

Test method: Spray water from any direction for 3 minutes.

Judgment criteria: There should be no water entering the interior.

IPX6 test
Testing equipment: nozzle (12.5mm diameter).

Test method: Spray water strongly from any direction for 3 minutes.

Judgment criteria: There should be no water entering the interior.

IPX7 test
Testing equipment: immersion tank.

Test method: The sample is immersed in 1 meter deep water for 30 minutes.

Judgment criteria: There should be no water entering the interior.

IPX8 test
Testing equipment: immersion tank.

Testing method: The sample is immersed in a specified depth (defined by the manufacturer) for a specified period of time.

Judgment criteria: There should be no water entering the interior.

IPX9 test
Testing equipment: High temperature and high pressure water spray device.

Test method: The sample is subjected to high temperature and high pressure water spray at 80 ° C for 30 seconds.

Judgment criteria: There should be no water entering the interior.

4. Post test evaluation
Appearance inspection: Check for water stains, deformation, or damage on the casing.

Internal inspection: Open the casing and check if water has entered the interior.

Functional inspection: Test the electrical and mechanical performance of the product to ensure that its functionality is not affected by water.

Judgment result: Based on the test results, confirm whether the product meets the requirements of the corresponding IP level.

5. Improvement measures
Sealing design: Optimize the sealing structure of the shell, such as adding sealing rings, improving seam design, etc.

Drainage design: Add drainage holes or ventilation openings to prevent water accumulation.

Material improvement: Choose more corrosion-resistant materials to enhance the waterproof ability of the shell.

6. Compliance with standards
International standards: Ensure that testing methods and evaluation criteria comply with IEC 60529 standards.

Certification requirements: Ensure that the product meets the certification requirements of the relevant industry or region based on its intended use.

Through the above steps, the waterproof ability of the product casing can be comprehensively evaluated to ensure that it can meet the protection requirements at IPX1~IPX9 levels.
