Free (repeated) drop test

This test is used to simulate the impact effects caused by rough operations such as impact, vibration, and falling when equipment samples are vigorously moved or repaired during use.

Free (repeated) drop test is a testing method used to simulate rough operations such as impact, vibration, and drop that equipment may be subjected to during handling, maintenance, or daily use. This test aims to evaluate the structural integrity, functional reliability, and protective performance of the equipment after being impacted. The following are the key elements and steps of the free (repeated) drop test:

1. Test objectives
Structural integrity: Evaluate whether the mechanical structure of the equipment is damaged after falling.

Functional reliability: Check if the device functions properly after being dropped.

Protective performance: Verify whether the protective design of the equipment can effectively absorb impact energy.

2. Testing conditions
Drop height: Determine the drop height based on the device type and usage scenario (such as 0.5 meters, 1 meter, 1.5 meters).

Falling surface: usually made of concrete or hardwood, simulating a real falling environment.

Drop direction: The device needs to be dropped from different angles (such as front, back, side, corner) to ensure a comprehensive evaluation.

Number of drops: Typically, multiple drops (such as 10) are performed to evaluate the durability of the equipment.

Environmental conditions: Test under standard conditions (such as temperature of 25 ° C and humidity of 50%), or simulate extreme environments for additional testing.

3. Testing equipment
Drop testing machine: capable of precise control of drop height and angle.

High speed camera: Record the falling process and analyze the device's response under impact.

Sensor: measures acceleration, force, and other data during impact to evaluate impact strength.

4. Testing steps
prepare

Determine the drop height, surface, and angle.

Check the appearance and function of the equipment, and record the initial state.

Drop test:

Fix the device on the drop testing machine and drop it at the set height and angle.

Check the appearance and functionality of the equipment after each drop.

Repeated testing:

Repeat the drop multiple times (e.g. 10 times) and record the state after each drop.

Data analysis:

Evaluate the impact resistance performance of the equipment based on drop data and inspection results.

Judgment:

Confirm whether the equipment meets the requirements of structural integrity and functional reliability.

5. Judgment criteria
Appearance inspection: There is no obvious damage (such as cracks or deformation) on the appearance of the equipment.

Function check: The device is functioning properly and there is no performance degradation or failure.

Structural inspection: There is no looseness, detachment, or damage to the internal components.

6. Improvement measures
Material optimization: Choose materials with higher impact resistance, such as polycarbonate and TPU.

Structural design: Increase buffer areas (such as shock pads, elastic brackets).

Internal fixation: Ensure that internal components (such as circuit boards, batteries) are securely fixed.

Protective design: Adopting integrated or modular design to reduce the impact on internal components.

7. Common standards
IEC 60068-2-31: Free Drop Test Standard for Electronic Devices.

MIL-STD-810G: Drop Test Standard for Military Equipment.

GB/T 2423.8: Chinese standard for free fall testing of electronic equipment.

8. Precautions
Test safety: Ensure that there are no personnel in the drop area to avoid accidental injury.

Environmental control: Avoid testing in high humidity or high pollution environments.

Multiple tests: Ensure that the device can still function properly after multiple drops.

User scenario: Simulate falling situations in actual use (such as handling and maintenance).

Through free (repeated) drop tests, the structural integrity and functional reliability of the equipment can be evaluated after impact, ensuring that it can still function normally under rough operating conditions and meet design and application requirements.
