creepage distance

The structure of the appliance should ensure that the creepage distance is sufficient to withstand the electrical stress that the appliance may experience. Determine whether it is qualified through the requirements and tests of 29.2.

According to electrical safety standards such as IEC 60335-1 or GB 4706.1, creepage distance refers to the shortest path measured along the insulation surface between two conductive components. The design of creepage distance must ensure that it can withstand the electrical stress that appliances may encounter during normal use, especially in polluted or humid environments. The following is a specific explanation and testing method for this requirement:

1. Definition of Creepage Distance

Creepage distance refers to the shortest path between two conductive components along the insulation surface, used to prevent leakage or flashover along the insulation surface.

2. Sources of electrical stress

The electrical stresses that the creepage distance may withstand include:

Working voltage: The voltage applied by an appliance during normal operation.

Transient overvoltage: Transient high voltage caused by switch operation, lightning strikes, etc.

Environmental pollution: Dust, moisture, pollutants, etc. may reduce the insulation performance of the insulation surface.

3. Structural design requirements

To ensure that the creepage distance can withstand electrical stress, the design must meet the following requirements:

Sufficient distance: Ensure that the creepage distance meets the standard requirements based on the rated voltage and pollution level.

Reasonable layout: Avoid short insulation surface paths between conductive components, especially in high voltage areas.

Material selection: Choose insulation materials with high resistance to residual current tracking index (CTI).

Pollution prevention: The design should prevent the influence of dust, moisture, etc. on the insulation surface.

4. Testing requirements (according to clause 29.2)

Verify whether the creepage distance meets the requirements through the following tests:

4.1 Creepage distance measurement

Testing method:

Measure the shortest path along the insulation surface between two conductive components using measuring tools such as calipers and microscopes.

Ensure that the measured values meet the standard requirements for creepage distance.

Qualification criteria:

The measured value should be greater than or equal to the minimum creepage distance specified in the standard.

4.2 Leakage Trace Test

Testing method:

Use a leakage trace tester (such as a leakage trace index tester) to evaluate the leakage resistance performance of insulation materials.

Apply voltage and electrolyte on the insulation surface to simulate the leakage situation in a polluted environment.

Qualification criteria:

The insulation material should be able to withstand the specified voltage without experiencing leakage, marking or breakdown.

4.3 Electrical Strength Test

Testing method:

Apply the specified test voltage on the creepage distance (usually twice the rated voltage+1000V, or according to specific requirements of the standard).

The test voltage lasts for 1 minute.

Qualification criteria:

No breakdown or flashover should occur.

The leakage current should be within the allowable range.

4.4 Pollution level assessment

Testing method:

Determine the pollution level based on the usage environment (such as pollution levels 1, 2, 3).

Evaluate the insulation performance of creepage distance in polluted environments.

Qualification criteria:

The creepage distance should meet the requirements of the corresponding pollution level.

5. Standard reference

IEC 60335-1: Safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances.

GB 4706.1: Chinese National Standard, equivalent to IEC 60335-1.

UL 60335-1: American standard, applicable to the North American market.

6. Calculation of Creepage Distance

The minimum value of creepage distance is usually determined based on the following factors:

Rated voltage: The higher the voltage, the greater the required creepage distance.

Pollution level: The higher the pollution level, the greater the required creepage distance.

The CTI value of insulation materials: The higher the material's resistance to leakage tracing index (CTI), the smaller the required creepage distance.

7. Testing equipment

Measurement tools: such as calipers and microscopes, used to measure creepage distance.

Leakage trace tester: used to evaluate the leakage resistance of insulation materials.

Electrical strength tester: used to apply high voltage and detect breakdown or leakage current.

8. Other relevant requirements

Electrical clearance: Similar to creepage distance, but refers to the shortest distance through air, which must meet the requirements at the same time.

Double insulation or reinforced insulation: For Class II appliances, the creepage distance and electrical clearance must meet the requirements of double insulation or reinforced insulation.

9. Classification of Pollution Levels

Pollution level 1: No pollution or dry environment.

Pollution level 2: General pollution environment (such as household appliances).

Pollution level 3: Serious environmental pollution (such as industrial equipment).

Through the above tests and evaluations, it can be ensured that the design of the creepage distance can withstand electrical stress, thereby ensuring the safety and reliability of the equipment.
