gloss

Light is incident on the surface of the sample at geometric angles of 20 °, 60 °, and 85 °, and the glossiness of the paint film is determined by detecting the intensity of the reflected light

Glossiness is an important indicator for evaluating the reflective ability of paint film surfaces, usually determined by measuring the intensity of reflected light at specific angles. The following is a detailed explanation of glossiness testing:

Test Principle
The glossiness test is based on the incidence of light at specific angles (such as 20 °, 60 °, 85 °) onto the surface of the paint film, and the glossiness value is calculated by detecting the intensity of reflected light. Different angles are suitable for paint films with different gloss ranges:

20 ° angle: suitable for high gloss surfaces (such as mirror effects), able to distinguish subtle differences in high gloss paint films.

60 ° angle: Suitable for medium gloss surfaces, it is the most widely used angle.

85 ° angle: Suitable for low gloss surfaces (such as matte effects), it can better distinguish the differences of low gloss paint films.

Test steps
Instrument calibration:

Use standard calibration plates (high gloss and low gloss) to calibrate the gloss meter to ensure measurement accuracy.

Sample preparation:

Ensure that the surface of the paint film is smooth, clean, and free of dust, fingerprints, or other contaminants.

The sample size should be suitable for the measurement area of the glossiness meter.

Measurement angle selection:

Select the appropriate measurement angle based on the gloss range of the paint film:

High gloss: 20 °

Medium Gloss: 60 °

Low gloss: 85 °

Measurement operation:

Place the glossiness meter on the surface of the paint film to ensure stable contact between the instrument and the surface.

Trigger measurement and record the reflected light intensity value.

Result record:

Each sample should be measured at least 3 times, and the average value should be taken as the final result.

Record the measurement angle and glossiness value (in GU, Gloss Unit units).

Standard reference
Glossiness testing usually follows the following international or national standards:

ISO 2813: Coatings and varnishes - Determination of specular gloss.

ASTM D523: Standard Test Method for Mirror Gloss.

GB/T 9754: Chinese standard, paints and varnishes - Determination of specular gloss.

Precautions
Avoid direct sunlight or environmental light interference during measurement.

Ensure that the surface of the paint film is dry, smooth, and free of scratches or defects.

The measurement results from different angles cannot be directly compared, and the appropriate angle should be selected based on the gloss range of the paint film.

application
Glossiness testing is widely used in industries such as coatings, plastics, metals, and paper to evaluate the appearance quality and consistency of products. For example:

High gloss paint films (such as automotive coatings) are usually measured at a 20 ° angle.

Ordinary wall coatings are usually measured at a 60 ° angle.

Matte or low gloss paint films are usually measured at an angle of 85 °.
