Ball pressure test

Thermoplastic materials must be processed at the corresponding temperature, and the indentation diameter must not exceed 2mm

Ball pressure testing is a test method used to evaluate the heat deformation resistance of thermoplastic materials at high temperatures. By pressing a steel ball of a specified diameter onto the surface of a material at a specific temperature and measuring the indentation diameter, the deformation resistance of the material at high temperatures can be determined. The following is a detailed explanation of the ball pressure test:

Objective of the test
The main purpose of ball pressure testing is to:

Evaluate the heat deformation resistance of thermoplastic materials at high temperatures.

Verify whether the material can maintain sufficient mechanical strength in high temperature environments.

Ensure that the material does not undergo excessive softening or deformation under high temperature usage conditions.

Test Principle
The ball pressure test is based on the following principles:

Press a steel ball of the specified diameter onto the surface of the material at a specific temperature.

Apply the prescribed pressure and maintain it for a certain period of time.

Measure the indentation diameter to determine the deformation resistance of the material at high temperatures.

Test equipment
Ball pressure tester:

Including heating device, pressure applying device, and measuring device.

The diameter of the steel ball is usually 5mm.

Heating device:

Used to heat the sample to a specified temperature, typically 75 ℃, 125 ℃, or other temperatures determined by the material's usage environment.

Pressure application device:

Used to apply a specified pressure, usually 20N.

Measurement tool:

Such as a vernier caliper or microscope, used to measure indentation diameter.

Test steps
Prepare samples:

The sample should be a flat sheet or block with a thickness of at least 2.5mm.

Ensure that the sample surface is clean and free of defects.

Heating the sample:

Place the sample in a heating device and heat it to the specified temperature (such as 75 ℃ or 125 ℃).

Maintain the sample at the test temperature for at least 1 hour to ensure uniform temperature.

Apply pressure:

Place the steel ball on the surface of the sample and apply the specified pressure (usually 20N).

Maintain pressure for 1 hour.

Cooling sample:

After removing the pressure, cool the sample to room temperature.

Measure indentation diameter:

Measure the indentation diameter using a vernier caliper or microscope.

Record the measurement results.

Assessment results:

Determine whether the indentation diameter is qualified according to standard requirements (usually requiring the indentation diameter not to exceed 2mm).

Qualification Standard
The qualification criteria for ball pressure testing are usually:

Indentation diameter: The indentation diameter shall not exceed 2mm.

Material deformation: There should be no obvious cracks, bubbles, or other defects on the surface of the sample.

relevant standards
The criteria for ball pressure testing vary depending on the industry and product type, and common standards include:

IEC 60695-10-2: Used to evaluate the heat deformation resistance of non-metallic materials used in electrical and electronic products.

GB/T 5169.21: Chinese National Standard, equivalent to IEC 60695-10-2.

UL 746A: Used to evaluate the heat resistance of polymer materials.

Precautions
Sample selection:

The sample should be representative and able to reflect the performance of the batch material.

Temperature control:

Ensure the temperature stability of the heating device and avoid fluctuations that may affect the test results.

Pressure control:

The applied pressure should be accurate, avoiding overpressure or underpressure.

Measurement accuracy:

Use high-precision measuring tools to ensure accurate measurement of indentation diameter.

Application field
Ball pressure testing is widely used in the following fields:

Electrical and electronic products: Evaluate the heat resistance and deformation ability of insulation materials, shell materials, etc.

Household appliances: Verify the performance of plastic components in high-temperature environments.

Automotive industry: Testing the heat resistance of plastic components inside cars.

Industrial equipment: Evaluate the heat deformation resistance of plastic materials used in industry.

Through ball pressure testing, the thermal deformation resistance of thermoplastic materials at high temperatures can be comprehensively evaluated, providing important basis for material selection, process optimization, and quality control.
