Electric fast transient pulse group

Simulate the switching of inductive loads (such as relays and contactors); The interference to the switching of high-voltage switches (such as vacuum switches and sulfur hexafluoride) equipment is caused by a pulse train with a discharge waveform of 5ns/50ns (rising edge 5ns, half wave time 50ns), a pulse train duration of 15ms, and a pulse period of 300ms. The characteristics are fast rise, short duration, low energy, but high repetition frequency.

Electrical Fast Transient (EFT) testing is an important component of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing, used to simulate the fast transient interference that equipment may encounter in actual usage environments. This interference is usually caused by the switching of inductive loads (such as relays, contactors) or the switching of high-voltage switches (such as vacuum switches, sulfur hexafluoride switches). The purpose of EFT testing is to evaluate the anti-interference performance of the equipment under test (EUT) against this transient interference.

Test purpose
The main purpose of EFT testing is to verify whether the equipment can maintain normal function without performance degradation, misoperation, or damage when subjected to fast transient pulse group interference. This is crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of equipment, especially in fields such as industrial control, medical equipment, automotive electronics, and communication systems.

Test Standard
EFT testing is usually conducted according to international or industry standards, and common standards include:

IEC 61000-4-4: Electrical fast transient burst immunity test standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

EN 61000-4-4: European standard, consistent with the content of IEC 61000-4-4.

GB/T 17626.4: Chinese National Standard, equivalent to IEC 61000-4-4.

test method
Test environment:

Testing is usually conducted in a shielded room to avoid external electromagnetic interference affecting the test results.

Shielding indoor walls with conductive materials to isolate external electromagnetic fields.

Test equipment:

EFT generator: generates fast transient pulse trains that meet standard requirements.

Coupling/Decoupling Network (CDN): couples EFT pulse trains to the power or signal lines of the device under test, while preventing interference signals from affecting other devices.

Monitoring equipment: used to monitor the working status and performance of the tested equipment.

Test steps:

Place the test equipment on the test bench in the shielded room and connect the necessary power and signal lines.

Set the parameters of the EFT generator according to the testing standards:

Pulse waveform: 5 ns rising edge, 50 ns half wave time.

Pulse train duration: 15 ms.

Pulse period: 300 ms.

Pulse repetition frequency: typically 5 kHz.

Inject EFT pulse trains into the power, control, or signal lines of the device under test through a coupling/decoupling network.

Gradually increase the voltage level of the EFT pulse train (usually from 0.5 kV to 4 kV, depending on standard requirements).

At each voltage level, observe whether the tested equipment exhibits performance degradation, misoperation, or damage.

Record the test results, including the response of the tested equipment and any abnormal phenomena.

Test parameters:

Pulse waveform: 5 ns rising edge, 50 ns half wave time.

Pulse train duration: 15 ms.

Pulse period: 300 ms.

Pulse repetition frequency: typically 5 kHz.

Test voltage levels: typically 0.5 kV, 1 kV, 2 kV, and 4 kV.

Test result evaluation
According to the standard, the tested equipment should maintain normal operation during the testing process without significant performance degradation or functional failure.

Failure criteria: If the device experiences performance degradation, misoperation, or damage during testing, it will be considered a test failure.

Rectification measures: For devices that fail the test, measures such as filtering, shielding, or circuit design optimization may need to be taken to improve their anti-interference ability.

Application field
EFT testing is widely used in the following fields:

Industrial equipment: such as PLC, frequency converter, industrial robots, etc.

Medical equipment: such as electrocardiographs, ultrasound devices, etc.

Automotive electronics: such as in car entertainment systems, autonomous driving sensors, etc.

Consumer electronics: such as mobile phones, computers, household appliances, etc.

Communication system: such as base stations, routers, etc.

Through EFT testing, it can be ensured that the equipment operates stably in complex electromagnetic environments, meets regulatory requirements, and improves user satisfaction.
