Flicker

Examine the ability of the power module of the device to cause frequency changes in the input power supply. This frequency change, when injected back into the grid from the device port, can cause fluctuations in the grid frequency, resulting in damage to the grid.

Voltage Flicker testing is an important component of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, used to evaluate the impact of input power frequency changes caused by equipment power modules on the power grid. This frequency variation may be injected back into the grid through device ports, causing fluctuations in grid frequency and causing interference or damage to the grid and other connected devices. The purpose of voltage flicker testing is to ensure that the equipment does not cause excessive frequency fluctuations to the power grid during operation, and complies with relevant regulations and standards.

Test purpose
The main purpose of voltage flicker testing is to verify whether the input power frequency changes caused by the equipment power module during operation are within the allowable range, in order to avoid interference with the power grid. This is crucial for ensuring the stability of the power grid and the normal operation of other connected devices, especially in the fields of industrial equipment, household appliances, and lighting equipment.

Test Standard
Voltage flicker testing is usually conducted according to international or industry standards, and common standards include:

IEC 61000-3-3: Voltage fluctuation and flicker limit standards for low voltage equipment developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

EN 61000-3-3: European standard, consistent with the content of IEC 61000-3-3.

GB 17625.2: Chinese National Standard, equivalent to IEC 61000-3-3.

test method
Test environment:

Testing is typically conducted in a laboratory environment using specialized voltage flicker testing equipment.

The testing environment should control the power supply voltage and frequency to ensure the accuracy of the test results.

Test equipment:

Voltage flicker tester: used to measure voltage fluctuations and flicker caused by equipment.

Power simulator: used to provide stable power input.

Monitoring equipment: used to monitor the working status and power parameters of the tested equipment.

Test steps:

Connect the test equipment to the voltage flicker tester and power simulator, and connect the necessary loads.

Set the parameters of the power simulator (such as voltage, frequency, etc.) according to the testing standards.

Run the test equipment and simulate its normal working state.

Use a voltage flicker tester to measure the voltage fluctuations and flicker values caused by the equipment:

Short term flicker value (Pst): evaluates voltage fluctuations over a short period of time (usually 10 minutes).

Long term flicker value (Plt): evaluates voltage fluctuations over a long period of time (usually 2 hours).

Record the test results and compare them with the standard limits.

Test parameters:

Short term flicker value (Pst): The usual limit is 1.0.

Long term flicker value (Plt): The usual limit is 0.65.

Voltage fluctuation limit: According to standard requirements, voltage fluctuations caused by equipment should not exceed the specified limit.

Test result evaluation
According to the standard, the short-term flicker value (Pst) and long-term flicker value (Plt) caused by the tested equipment should be within the standard limit range.

Failure criteria: If the flicker value caused by the device exceeds the standard limit, it is considered a test failure.

Rectification measures: For devices that have not passed the test, the following measures may need to be taken:

Optimize the design of the power module to reduce the frequency variation of the input power supply.

Add filtering circuits to suppress power fluctuations.

Improve equipment load characteristics and reduce the impact on the power grid.

Application field
Voltage flicker testing is widely used in the following fields:

Household appliances: such as air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, etc.

Lighting equipment: such as LED lights, fluorescent lamps, etc.

Industrial equipment: such as frequency converters, motor drivers, etc.

Power electronic equipment: such as inverters, UPS, etc.

Test significance
Through voltage flicker testing, it can be ensured that the equipment will not cause excessive frequency fluctuations to the power grid during operation, thereby ensuring the stability of the power grid and the normal operation of other connected devices. This is of great significance for improving the electromagnetic compatibility and user satisfaction of equipment, especially in situations where the power grid load is complex or the power quality requirements are high.
