Testing of infant and toddler products

In June 2020, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) released EN 14350:2020 "Childcare products - Drinking equipment - Safety requirements and testing methods". This standard specifies the safety requirements for materials, structure, performance, packaging, and product information of drinking equipment for children aged 0 to 48 months. This standard is under the General Product Safety Requirements (GPSD).

EN 14350:2020 replaces the following two standards regarding drinking equipment for young children:
EN 14350-1:2004 "Children's use and care products - Drinking equipment - Part 1: General and mechanical requirements and tests"
EN 14350-2:2004 "Children's use and care products - Drinking equipment - Part 2: Chemical requirements and tests"

Compared to version 04, version 20 has a lot of updates, one of which is the increase in the number of migrated heavy metal elements from 8 to 19, and adjustments to some element limits.

EN 14372 is a safety testing standard for child care tableware and feeders. The latest version is still the 2004 version, which is not within the framework of the General Product Safety Requirements (GPSD). This standard specifies safety requirements for materials, manufacturing, performance, packaging, and labeling of tableware and feeding utensils used by infants and young children. Any product used for feeding infants and young children aged 36 months or younger, or for feeding with the help of others, is included. This includes products that have different primary functions but secondary functions that allow children to eat on their own or with the help of others.

EN 14350 Children's drinking utensils, EN 14372 Infant tableware, GB 4806.2 National Food Safety Standard for pacifiers, GB 4806.7 National Food Safety Standard for plastic materials and products in contact with food, GB 4806.5 National Food Safety Standard for glass products, GB 4806.9 National Food Safety Standard for metal materials and products in contact with food, GB 4806.11 National Food Safety Standard for rubber materials and products in contact with food, etc

EN 14350:2020 "Childcare products - Drinking equipment - Safety requirements and testing methods" is a safety standard for drinking equipment for children aged 0 to 48 months published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard aims to ensure the safety of children's drinking equipment, covering requirements for materials, structure, performance, packaging, and product information. The following is an overview of the main content of the standard:

1. Scope of application

Drinking equipment suitable for children aged 0 to 48 months, including but not limited to:

bottle

pacifier

drinking cup

straw cup

Other similar products

2. Main safety requirements

(1) Material requirements

Chemical safety: The material must not release harmful substances (such as bisphenol A, phthalates, etc.) and must comply with relevant chemical substance restrictions.

Heat resistance: The material should be able to withstand high temperature disinfection without deformation or release of harmful substances.

Aging resistance: The material should maintain its physical and chemical properties after long-term use.

(2) Structural requirements

Size and shape: The size and shape of drinking equipment should be suitable for children to avoid suffocation or injury.

Edges and tips: All edges and tips should be smooth, without sharp parts, to prevent scratching children.

Sealing: Drinking equipment should have good sealing to prevent liquid leakage.

(3) Performance requirements

Mechanical strength: Drinking equipment should be able to withstand mechanical stresses during normal use, such as compression, drop, etc.

Bite resistance: Components such as pacifiers and straws should be able to withstand the bite of children and not easily break.

Flow control: The flow rate of pacifiers and straws should meet the drinking needs of children and avoid coughing.

(4) Packaging requirements

Packaging materials: Packaging materials should be safe and non-toxic to avoid harm to children.

Packaging label: The product information and usage instructions should be clearly marked on the packaging.

(5) Product Information Requirements

Instructions for use: The product should provide clear instructions for use, including cleaning, disinfection, and usage methods.

Warning label: The product should be labeled with necessary warning information, such as applicable age, usage precautions, etc.

3. Testing methods

(1) Chemical testing

Check whether the material contains harmful chemicals (such as bisphenol A, phthalates, etc.).

Test the chemical stability of the material after high-temperature disinfection.

(2) Mechanical testing

Drop test: Simulate the product falling from a certain height to detect whether it is broken or damaged.

Squeezing test: Simulate children's biting or squeezing to test the bite resistance and mechanical strength of the product.

Sealing test: Test the sealing performance of the product to ensure no liquid leakage.

(3) Traffic testing

Check if the flow rate of the pacifier and straw meets the standard requirements to avoid coughing.

(4) Heat resistance test

Detect the changes in physical and chemical properties of the product after high-temperature disinfection.

4. Compliance assessment

The product needs to undergo testing by a third-party laboratory to ensure compliance with the requirements of EN 14350:2020.

Manufacturers are required to provide technical documents, including design drawings, material lists, test reports, etc.

The product must be marked with the CE mark to indicate compliance with the General Product Safety Requirements (GPSD) of the European Union.

5. The significance of standards

Ensuring children's safety: Ensuring the safety of children's drinking equipment through strict safety requirements and testing methods.

Unified market requirement: Provide unified safety standards for the European market and promote product circulation.

Guide manufacturers: Provide clear design and production guidance to ensure that products comply with regulatory requirements.

6. Manufacturer's Responsibilities

Product design: Ensure that the product design complies with the requirements of EN 14350:2020.

Material selection: Choose safe and non-toxic materials to avoid the use of harmful chemicals.

Test validation: Conduct testing through a third-party laboratory to ensure that the product meets the standards.

Identification and instructions: Provide clear product information and usage instructions to ensure consumers use the product correctly.

7. Consumer precautions

Choose compliant products: When purchasing, pay attention to whether the product is marked with the CE mark and complies with the EN 14350:2020 standard.

Proper use and maintenance: Use and clean the product correctly according to the instructions to avoid safety hazards caused by improper use.

Regular inspection: Regularly check whether the product is damaged or aged, and replace it in a timely manner.

EN 14350:2020 provides comprehensive guidance on the safety of children's drinking equipment, ensuring that products meet high standards of safety requirements in design, materials, performance, and information, providing strong protection for children's health and safety.
