Mechanical testing - Key lifespan testing

Key life testing is a testing method used to evaluate the durability and reliability of products such as key switches, keyboards, remote controls, and phone keys under repeated pressing operations. By simulating the button operation in actual use, test whether the button can still work normally after multiple presses, and predict its service life.

Test purpose
Evaluate durability: Check whether the button can still maintain normal function after multiple presses.

Prediction of lifespan: Predict the lifespan of buttons in actual use through acceleration testing.

Optimization design: Improve the button structure or material based on test results to enhance its reliability.

Test Principle
The key life test simulates manual pressing operation through a mechanical device, repeatedly pressing the key with a certain force, frequency, and stroke, recording the performance changes of the key during the testing process until the key fails or reaches the predetermined number of tests.

test conditions
According to the product design standards, the pressure range is usually between 0.5 N and 5 N.

Pressing frequency: usually 10 times/minute to 60 times/minute, adjusted according to the product usage scenario.

Pressing stroke: Simulate the actual pressing depth, usually ranging from 0.5 mm to 2 mm.

Test frequency: Depending on product requirements, it usually ranges from several thousand to several hundred thousand times.

Environmental conditions: Normal temperature, high temperature, low temperature, or humidity environments can be selected for testing to simulate different usage scenarios.

Test steps
Sample preparation: Select representative button samples to ensure they are in normal working condition.

Installation sample: Fix the button on the testing equipment to ensure accurate pressing position.

Set parameters: According to testing standards or product requirements, set the pressure, frequency, stroke, and number of tests.

Start testing: Start the testing equipment and repeatedly press the buttons.

Periodic inspection: Regularly check whether the function of the keys is normal and record the failure of the keys.

Test completed: Stop the test when the button fails or the predetermined number of tests is reached.

Data analysis: Record the number of button failures, failure modes (such as stuck keys, no response, poor tactile sensation, etc.), and analyze their lifespan and reliability.

test equipment
Button life testing machine: a specialized automated equipment that can simulate pressing operations and record test data.

Force sensor: used to measure the degree of pressure applied to ensure testing accuracy.

Counter: records the number of presses.

Environmental test chamber (optional): used to simulate high temperature, low temperature, or humidity environments.

Common standards
IEC 61058: Standard for Testing the Lifespan of Electrical Switches.

GB/T 14536: Chinese National Standard, Durability Test for Household and Similar Electrical Automatic Controllers.

MIL-STD-810: Military Equipment Environmental Testing Standard, including button durability testing.

ISO 9241: Durability testing standard for office equipment buttons.

Failure Mode
Function failure: The button cannot trigger or respond properly.

Decreased tactile sensation: The tactile sensation when pressing a button changes (such as becoming harder, softer, or stuttering).

Appearance damage: The surface of the button is worn, cracked, or deformed.

Decreased electrical performance: increased contact resistance of keys or unstable signals.

Application field
Consumer electronics: lifespan testing of buttons on mobile phones, tablets, remote controls, game controllers, and other devices.

Durability testing of control panel buttons for household appliances such as washing machines, microwave ovens, and rice cookers.

Automotive Electronics: Reliability testing of steering wheel buttons and center console buttons.

Industrial equipment: Durability testing of industrial control panel buttons.

Precautions
Sample selection: Ensure that the sample is representative and avoid deviation in test results.

Parameter setting: Set reasonable testing conditions based on the actual usage scenario of the product.

Data recording: Detailed recording of various data during the testing process for subsequent analysis.

Equipment calibration: Regularly calibrate testing equipment to ensure the accuracy of test results.

Through button lifespan testing, the durability and reliability of buttons can be effectively evaluated, providing scientific basis for product design and quality control.
