Photobiosafety testing

IEC/EN 62471; GB/T 20145 Photobiological Safety Testing

Photobiological safety testing is an important testing method for evaluating the potential hazards of light sources (such as LEDs, lasers, lamps, etc.) to human eyes and skin, mainly based on IEC/EN 62471 and GB/T 20145 standards. The following is a detailed explanation about photobiological safety testing:

1. Overview of Standards
(1) IEC/EN 62471
Full name: IEC/EN 62471 "Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems".

Scope of application: Applicable to all non laser light sources for optical biosafety testing.

Purpose: To evaluate the potential hazards of light sources to the eyes and skin, including ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation.

(2) GB/T 20145
Full name: GB/T 20145 "Photobiological Safety of Lamps and Lamp Systems".

Scope of application: Suitable for photo biological safety testing of lamps and lamp systems in the Chinese market.

Purpose: Similar to IEC/EN 62471, to evaluate the potential hazards of light sources to the eyes and skin.

2. Types of photobiological safety hazards
(1) UV hazards
Harm: Ultraviolet radiation may cause skin burns, keratitis, and cataracts.

Test parameters: UV radiation intensity, exposure time.

(2) Blue light hazards
Harm: Blue light radiation may cause retinal damage.

Test parameters: blue light weighted radiation dose, exposure time.

(3) Infrared hazards
Harm: Infrared radiation may cause lens opacity and skin burns in the eyes.

Test parameters: infrared radiation intensity, exposure time.

(4) Heat hazard
Hazard: The thermal radiation from the light source may cause skin burns.

Test parameters: thermal radiation intensity, exposure time.

3. Main testing items
(1) Spectral radiation
Definition: Measure the spectral radiation distribution of a light source.

Test method: Use a spectral radiometer to measure the spectral radiation distribution of the light source.

(2) Radiation intensity
Definition: Measure the radiation intensity of a light source.

Test method: Use a radiometer to measure the radiation intensity of the light source.

(3) Exposure time
Definition: Evaluate the degree of harm caused by light sources at different exposure times.

Testing method: Calculate the hazard index based on the radiation intensity and exposure time of the light source.

(4) Hazard index
Definition: Evaluate the potential harm of light sources to the eyes and skin.

Testing method: Calculate the hazard index based on spectral radiation data and exposure time.

4. Testing equipment
Spectral radiometer: used to measure the spectral radiation distribution of a light source.

Radiometer: used to measure the radiation intensity of a light source.

Photometer: used to measure light output.

Colorimeter: used to measure color temperature and color rendering index.

5. Corporate Responsibility
(1) Product Design
Optimize light source design to reduce photobiological safety hazards.

Choose high-quality LED chips and driver circuits to reduce radiation intensity.

(2) Compliance testing
Ensure product compliance with IEC/EN 62471 and GB/T 20145 standards through photobiological safety testing.

Prepare complete technical documents, including test reports, design drawings, etc.

(3) Labels and identification
Label the product with the biosafety level and instructions for safe use.

Provide instructions for use, including applicable conditions, safety precautions, etc.

6. Summary
Photobiological safety testing is an important method for evaluating the potential hazards of light sources to human eyes and skin. According to IEC/EN 62471 and GB/T 20145 standards, it covers types of hazards such as ultraviolet, blue light, infrared, and thermal radiation. Enterprises need to optimize product design, ensure product compliance with relevant standards through photobiological safety testing, fulfill compliance responsibilities, and enhance product quality and market competitiveness.
