Forced discharge test

Discharge any individual cell of the fully discharged battery to the termination voltage, while keeping all other cells fully charged. Then, discharge the battery pack at a constant current of 2C for 60 minutes and visually inspect the appearance of the battery pack

Forced discharge testing is an important testing method for evaluating the safety and stability of battery packs under abnormal discharge conditions. By simulating the situation where one individual battery in the battery pack is discharged to the termination voltage while the other individual batteries are fully charged, detect whether the battery pack will experience dangerous situations such as fire, explosion, and leakage. The following is the detailed content of the forced discharge test:

1. Test purpose

Evaluate the safety and stability of the battery pack under abnormal discharge conditions.

Ensure that the battery pack does not experience dangerous situations such as fire, explosion, or leakage when a single battery is discharged to the termination voltage.

Verify whether the battery pack meets relevant safety standards and requirements.

2. Testing principle

By discharging a single cell in the battery pack to the termination voltage while keeping the other cells fully charged, and then discharging at a constant current of 2C for 60 minutes, the appearance, structural integrity, and safety of the battery pack are checked.

3. Testing methods

(1) Test preparation

Discharge a single battery cell in the battery pack to the termination voltage.

Fully charge the other individual cells in the battery pack.

Prepare constant current discharge equipment and voltage measurement equipment.

(2) Forced discharge test

Discharge the battery pack with a constant current of 2C for 60 minutes.

Record the voltage, current, and time during the discharge process.

(3) Check after testing

Check the appearance of the battery pack for any damage, deformation, leakage, or other issues.

Observe whether there are any dangerous situations such as fire or explosion in the battery pack.

Measure the voltage and internal resistance of the battery pack to evaluate whether its electrical performance is normal.

4. Testing standards

International standards:

IEC 62133 (Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary batteries).

UN 38.3 (Safety testing for transportation of lithium batteries).

Industry standards:

GB 31241 (Safety Requirements for Lithium ion Batteries for Portable Electronic Products, China).

UL 1642 (Lithium Battery Safety Standard, USA).

5. Testing equipment

Constant current discharge equipment: used for discharging at a constant current of 2C.

Voltage measurement equipment: used to measure the voltage of battery packs.

Internal resistance tester: used to measure the internal resistance of battery packs.

Infrared thermal imaging device: used to monitor the temperature changes of battery packs during discharge.

6. Data analysis and evaluation

Appearance inspection: Record whether the battery pack is damaged, deformed, leaking, etc.

Safety assessment: Observe whether there are any dangerous situations such as fire or explosion in the battery pack.

Electrical performance: Measure the voltage and internal resistance of the battery pack to evaluate whether its electrical performance is normal.

7. Common problems and solutions

Battery pack damage: It may be due to insufficient strength of the outer shell material, and a higher strength material needs to be replaced.

Leakage: It may be due to insufficient sealing of the battery pack, and the sealing design of the battery pack needs to be improved.

Fire or explosion: It may be due to internal short circuit or material failure of the battery pack, and the design and production process of the battery pack need to be optimized.

8. Application scenarios

Testing of battery packs for consumer electronics products such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets.

Electric tools: such as battery pack testing for electric drills and chainsaws.

Electric vehicles: such as testing of power battery packs for electric vehicles.

Energy storage system: such as testing of solar energy storage battery packs.

9. Test report

Testing conditions: including discharge current, discharge time, testing environment, etc.

Test results: including appearance inspection results, safety assessment, electrical performance, etc.

Conclusion and Suggestions: Evaluate whether the sample meets the relevant standards and propose improvement suggestions.

Through forced discharge testing, the safety and stability of the battery pack under abnormal discharge conditions can be comprehensively evaluated, ensuring that it can meet safety requirements in practical use and providing scientific basis for the design and optimization of the battery pack.
