Rotational wear

Apply a quantitative load on two grinding wheels and bring them into contact with the sample. After a specified number of frictions, the sample will experience wear, and then evaluate it using an appropriate method.

The rotational wear test is a commonly used method for evaluating the wear resistance of materials. By contacting the sample with a grinding wheel and applying a quantitative load, after a specified number of frictions, the wear amount of the sample is measured or the surface wear condition is observed to evaluate the wear resistance of the material. The following is a detailed explanation of the rotational wear test:

Test Principle
The rotational wear test is based on the following principles:

Fix the sample on the testing machine so that it comes into contact with two rotating grinding wheels.

Apply a quantitative load on the grinding wheel to ensure a certain amount of friction is generated between the sample and the grinding wheel.

After a specified number of frictions, measure the wear amount of the sample or observe its surface wear condition.

Evaluate the wear resistance of materials through wear amount or wear morphology.

Test equipment
Rotating Wear Testing Machine:

Including sample fixtures, grinding wheels, load application devices, and counters.

Grinding wheels are usually made of sandpaper, rubber, or other abrasives.

Grinding wheel:

Select grinding wheels of different materials and particle sizes according to the experimental requirements.

Common grinding wheel materials include silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, etc.

Sample:

The standard sample size is usually a circular disc with a diameter of 25mm and a thickness of 6mm, and the specific size is determined according to the standard or material type.

The surface of the sample should be flat and free of defects.

Measurement tool:

Electronic balance: used to measure the wear of a sample.

Microscope or surface profilometer: used to observe the wear morphology of the sample surface.

Test steps
Prepare the sample:

Prepare the sample according to the standard requirements and ensure that the sample size meets the specifications.

Measure the initial mass of the sample to the nearest 0.0001g.

Installation sample:

Fix the sample in the sample fixture of the testing machine, ensuring good contact between the sample and the grinding wheel.

Adjust the position of the grinding wheel to ensure even contact pressure between the sample and the grinding wheel.

Set experimental parameters:

Set the load size, usually 5N to 20N, and the specific load is determined according to the standard or material type.

Set the friction frequency, usually between 1000 and 5000 times.

Start the experiment:

Start the testing machine and rotate the grinding wheel at a constant speed.

Record the number of friction cycles to ensure stable load during the test process.

End of experiment:

Stop the test when the specified number of friction cycles is reached.

Remove the sample and clean the surface of any remaining debris.

Measure wear amount:

Measure the mass loss of the sample using an electronic balance and calculate the wear amount.

Observe the wear morphology of the sample surface using a microscope or surface profilometer.

Data analysis:

Evaluate the wear resistance of materials based on wear amount or wear morphology.

Test Standard
The standards for rotational wear testing vary depending on the material and application field, and common standards include:

ASTM G65: Used to evaluate the wear resistance of materials in dry sand/rubber wheel abrasion tests.

ISO 4649: Used to evaluate the wear resistance of rubber materials.

GB/T 9867: Chinese National Standard for Rotational Wear Test of Rubber Materials.

result evaluation
Wear amount:

The smaller the wear amount, the better the wear resistance of the material.

Wear rate:

The lower the wear rate, the better the wear resistance of the material.

Wear morphology:

Observe the wear morphology of the sample surface and analyze the wear mechanism (such as abrasive wear, fatigue wear, etc.).

Precautions
Sample preparation:

Ensure that the sample size and surface quality meet the standard requirements.

Equipment calibration:

Regularly calibrate testing machines and measuring tools to ensure measurement accuracy.

Environmental conditions:

The experiment should be conducted under standard environmental conditions (temperature 23 ± 2 ° C, relative humidity 50 ± 5%).

Multiple experiments:

Each sample should be tested at least 3 times, and the average value should be taken as the final result.

application
The rotational wear test is widely used in the following fields:

Rubber industry: Evaluate the wear resistance of rubber products.

Plastic industry: Testing the wear resistance of plastic materials.

Coating industry: Evaluate the wear resistance of coatings.

Quality control: Check whether the product meets the requirements for wear resistance.

Through the rotational wear test, the wear resistance of materials under friction conditions can be comprehensively evaluated, providing important basis for material selection, process optimization, and quality control.
