GEMS certification

GEMS certification is a mandatory energy efficiency certification system implemented by the Australian and New Zealand governments, known as the "Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards", aimed at improving the energy efficiency of electronic and electrical products, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting green and low-carbon development.

1、 The core points of GEMS certification

Legal Status and Scope of Application
GEMS certification officially came into effect in Australia and New Zealand on October 1, 2012, replacing the original MEPS certification. All electronic products listed in the regulatory catalog must pass this certification in order to legally enter the Australian and New Zealand markets for sale. Unverified products may face risks such as delisting, recall, or fines.

Certification applicant requirements
The applicant must be a locally registered enterprise in Australia or New Zealand, and overseas manufacturers must entrust a local company as an authorized representative to complete the registration. This regulation poses a certain compliance threshold for export enterprises and requires them to plan local cooperation resources in advance.

Registration management mechanism

Unified registration by the Australian Regulator, no longer applying separately by state;
The registration is valid for 5 years;
Divided into four categories based on product categories, the registration fee ranges from 440 to 780 Australian dollars.

2、 Main controlled product categories

GEMS certification covers a wide range, mainly including the following categories:

Household appliances: washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, air conditioners, electric water heaters, etc;
Lighting equipment: compact fluorescent lamps, double ended fluorescent lamps, fluorescent lamp ballasts, LED lamps, incandescent lamps, ultra-low voltage converters, etc;
Audio, video, and information technology products: televisions, digital set-top boxes, external power supplies, computers, monitors, printers, video game controllers, etc;
Industrial and commercial equipment: three-phase motors, distribution transformers, commercial refrigerators, refrigeration towers, etc.

3、 Certification process and cycle

Determine whether the product is within the regulatory scope;
Send samples to ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories for energy efficiency testing;
After obtaining the test report, submit it to the GEMS registration system;
After the data review is approved, a certification certificate will be issued.

The entire process usually takes about 4 weeks: the testing cycle takes about 1 week, and the registration review takes about 2 weeks. If the report is not qualified, it can be modified and resubmitted without additional charge.

4、 Collaborative relationship with other certifications

The Australian and New Zealand markets implement the RCM marking system, which integrates three requirements: Safety (SAA), Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), and Energy Efficiency (GEMS);
Enterprises can apply for RCM certification through CB system reports, combined with GEMS registration, to achieve "one test, multiple recognitions" and improve export efficiency.
