Instantaneous drop in supply voltage

Simulate the instantaneous voltage drop caused by conventional melting in other circuits to determine whether the functional state of the sample meets the design requirements.

Objective of the experiment
The purpose of this experiment is to simulate the instantaneous drop in power supply voltage caused by conventional melting (such as fuse melting) in a circuit, test the performance of the equipment under the condition of voltage instantaneous drop, and evaluate whether its functional status meets the design requirements. Through experiments, verify the tolerance and stability of the equipment under transient voltage drops, ensuring its reliability in practical applications.

Experimental Background
In electrical systems, voltage drop may be caused by the following reasons:

Fuse blown:

The high current load in the circuit causes the fuse to melt, resulting in an instantaneous drop in voltage.

Short circuit or overload:

Circuit short circuit or overload causes instantaneous voltage drop.

Power switching:

Transient voltage drop caused by power or load switching.

For electrical equipment, an instantaneous drop in supply voltage may cause functional abnormalities or resets, therefore it is necessary to test the performance of the equipment under conditions of voltage instantaneous drop.

Experimental equipment
Device under Test (DUT): Electrical equipment or system that needs to be tested.

Programmable DC power supply: Simulate an instantaneous drop in supply voltage (such as from 12V/24V to 5V/3V).

Voltage meter: monitors the amplitude and duration of instantaneous voltage drops.

Ammeter: measures the current under instantaneous voltage drop.

Oscilloscope: monitors the waveform of instantaneous voltage drop and the working status of equipment.

Load simulator: Simulate the load situation of the device in actual operation.

Fuse simulator (optional): Simulate the instantaneous voltage drop caused by the melting of a fuse.

Experimental Procedure
Device connection:

Connect the DUT to a programmable DC power supply.

Connect an ammeter in series and a voltmeter in parallel in a circuit to monitor current and voltage.

Connect an oscilloscope to monitor the waveform of instantaneous voltage drop and the working status of the equipment.

Connect the load simulator to simulate the load of the device in actual operation.

Initial testing:

Under normal operating conditions, record the working status of the DUT, including voltage, current, and functional performance.

Voltage instantaneous drop simulation:

Using a programmable DC power supply, simulate an instantaneous drop in supply voltage (such as from 12V/24V to 5V/3V, lasting for tens to hundreds of milliseconds).

Record the voltage, current, and working status of the DUT under instantaneous voltage drop.

Functional status monitoring:

Monitor the functional status of the equipment during and after the instantaneous voltage drop.

Observe whether there are any abnormalities in the device, such as functional failure, reset, data loss, etc.

Recovery testing:

Restore normal power supply voltage and check if the equipment can resume normal operation.

Record the working status of the device after restoring normal power supply.

Multiple tests:

Repeat the test under different instantaneous voltage drop conditions (such as different amplitudes and durations) to evaluate the

performance of the equipment.

Data analysis:

Compare the test data under different instantaneous voltage drop conditions and analyze the performance of the equipment.

Evaluate whether the performance of the equipment meets the design requirements.

Experimental precautions
safety first:

Transient voltage drop may cause impact on equipment, and protective measures should be taken to avoid equipment damage.

Ensure good ventilation in the experimental environment to avoid equipment overheating and causing fires.

Gradually adjust parameters:

When simulating instantaneous voltage drops, the voltage amplitude and duration should be gradually adjusted to avoid equipment damage caused by high currents.

Real-time monitoring

During the experiment, real-time monitoring of voltage, current, and equipment status is required to promptly detect any abnormalities.

Fuse simulation (optional):

If you need to simulate the instantaneous voltage drop caused by a blown fuse, you can use a fuse simulator.

Experimental results and conclusions
Experimental results:

Record the performance of the device under different instantaneous voltage drop conditions, including functional status, reset behavior, etc.

Record the working status of the device after restoring normal power supply.

Conclusion:

Evaluate the performance of the equipment under the condition of instantaneous voltage drop and confirm whether it meets the design requirements.

If the device is malfunctioning, analyze the cause and provide improvement suggestions.

If the device has an effective voltage transient protection mechanism, confirm that it meets the design requirements.

experiment report
The experimental report should include the following contents:

Experimental objective: Briefly describe the objectives of the experiment.

Experimental equipment: List all the equipment used and their specifications.

Experimental steps: Detailed description of the experimental operation process.

Experimental data: Record all test data, including charts and waveforms.

Data analysis: Analyze experimental data to draw conclusions.

Conclusion and Suggestions: Summarize the experimental results and propose improvement suggestions.

Appendix: Typical Parameters of Transient Voltage Drop
Instantaneous voltage drop amplitude:

12V system: Instantly drops from 12V to 5V-9V.

24V system: Instantly drops from 24V to 10V-18V.

Duration of instantaneous voltage drop:

From tens of milliseconds to hundreds of milliseconds (such as 50ms, 100ms, 200ms).

Through this experiment, the performance of the equipment under the condition of instantaneous drop in power supply voltage can be verified, ensuring its normal operation or effective protection in practical applications.
