IC certification

IC certification is a mandatory access certification for electronic and electrical products entering the Canadian market, overseen by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), formerly known as Industry Canada (IC). If you are planning to export electronic products to Canada, IC certification is a crucial compliance threshold that must be met. It is not only a legal requirement but also a reflection of product technical strength and market credibility.

1. What is IC certification? Who needs it?

IC certification is a mandatory market access system implemented by Canada for electronic and electrical products, focusing on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio equipment performance. Its core objective is to ensure that products do not generate excessive electromagnetic interference during use, remain unaffected by interference from other devices, and comply with radio frequency safety standards.

The applicable product range is extensive, primarily including:

Information technology equipment (such as computers, printers, power supplies)
Audio and video equipment (TV, sound system)
Wireless communication products (Bluetooth earphones, Wi-Fi routers, remote controls)
Engineering Medical Equipment (Medical Instruments, Industrial Controllers)
Telecommunications terminal equipment (telephones, modems)

✅ Special Reminder: All products with wireless functionality must obtain IC-ID certification; ordinary electronic products without radio frequency capabilities can comply through self-declaration (IC Verification).

2. Two Types of IC Certification

typenameApplicable ProductsDo you need an IC ID numberissuing authority
1IC Verification(自我验证)ITE products without wireless functionality (such as power supplies and displays)NoManufacturer's self declaration
2IC ID Certification(ID认证)All wireless products (Bluetooth, Wi Fi, Zigbee, etc.)yesAuthorized FCB/TCB institutions review and issue certificates

⚠️  Attention: IC-ID certification must be submitted by a local representative in Canada and technical documents must be kept for verification.

3、 The core process of IC authentication (taking IC-ID as an example)

Determine product categories and standards
Determine whether it belongs to a wireless device based on product functionality and select the corresponding standard (such as RSS-210 for low-power wireless devices).

Prepare technical documentation

Circuit diagram, block diagram, circuit description
User manual, label design draft
Software and hardware version number, product serial number
Fixed frequency software version (for RF testing)

Sample testing
Send the samples to an ISED accredited laboratory for EMC, RF output power, spectrum occupancy, and other project testing.

Submit application and review
The test report and technical documents will be submitted by the Canadian representative through TCB agency, awaiting ISED review.

Obtain IC-ID and attach identification
After approval, obtain a unique IC-ID number (format: CN-UPN), which must be clearly marked on the product nameplate or packaging.

4、 Certification cycle and cost reference

projectIC VerificationIC-ID authentication
period1-2 weeks3-4 weeks (average of 4 weeks)
costLow (laboratory issued)Depending on the complexity of the product, including testing fees, agency fees, and TCB audit fees
Validity periodUsually every 5 years, standard updates require reassessment

💡  Suggestion: If the product has passed FCC certification, its test data can be used to apply for IC certification, achieving "one test, multiple certifications" and saving time and costs.

Notice on ID Application:

1. Canadian representative address information is required.

2. The label should include the following information (manufacturer name or trademark, model name, IC ID number).

Related standards for IC certification:

The standards for IC certification are basically the same as those of FCC, and currently IC only limits electromagnetic interference.

ICES-001 simulation equipment: Industrial, Scientific, and Medical Radio Frequency Generators.

ICES-003 digital terminal equipment: Interference Computing Equipment Standards Digital Devices, such as ICES003: ITE: products and computer peripheral office equipment.

IC RSS Series transmitting and receiving devices are low-power wireless RF products. For example: RSS 210, applicable products: wireless mouse and keyboard, wireless remote control toys, and various low-power wireless RF products, CS03 (telecommunications terminal product PSTN).
