Grid test

Use a cutting tool to cut the coating onto the substrate to form a right angled grid pattern scratch, then use adhesive tape with a specified adhesive strength to adhere and tear it off, and evaluate the adhesion of the coating.

Cross Cut Test is a commonly used method for evaluating the adhesion of coatings. By cutting the coating to form a grid pattern, and then using adhesive tape to tear and observe the peeling of the coating, the adhesion of the coating can be rated. The following are the detailed steps and rating criteria for the grid test:

Test steps
Prepare samples:

Ensure that the sample surface is clean, dry, and free of oil stains.

The sample should be flat and easy to cut.

Cutting coating:

Use a cutting tool to cut a right angled mesh pattern on the surface of the coating. Usually, the grid spacing is 1mm or 2mm, depending on the coating thickness and standard requirements.

The cutting depth should reach the substrate, ensuring that the incision is clear and uniform.

Clean the grid:

Use a soft brush or compressed air to clean the mesh area and remove debris generated by cutting.

Paste adhesive tape:

Choose adhesive tape with specified adhesive strength (such as 3M tape).

Apply the adhesive tape evenly to the grid area, ensuring complete coverage and tight fit.

Use your fingers or eraser to flatten the adhesive tape and eliminate any air bubbles.

Tear off the adhesive tape:

Tear off the adhesive tape at a stable speed (within about 1 second), with an angle close to 180 °.

Observation and rating:

Observe the peeling of the coating in the grid area and evaluate it according to the rating criteria.

Rating Criteria
The rating of the grid test is usually based on the area and degree of coating detachment, and common rating criteria are as follows:

ISO 2409 standard:

Level 0: The cutting edge is completely smooth and without detachment.

Level 1: The cutting edge has slight detachment, with a detachment area of less than 5%.

Level 2: The cutting edge has some detachment, with a detachment area between 5% and 15%.

Level 3: There is significant detachment at the cutting edge, with a detachment area between 15% and 35%.

Level 4: The cutting edge has severe detachment, with a detachment area between 35% and 65%.

Level 5: The cutting edge completely falls off, with a detachment area greater than 65%.

ASTM D3359 standard:

5B: The cutting edge is completely smooth and without detachment.

4B: The cutting edge has slight detachment, with a detachment area of less than 5%.

3B: The cutting edge has some detachment, with a detachment area between 5% and 15%.

2B: There is significant detachment at the cutting edge, with a detachment area ranging from 15% to 35%.

1B: The cutting edge has severe detachment, with a detachment area between 35% and 65%.

0B: The cutting edge completely falls off, with a detachment area greater than 65%.

Precautions
Cutting depth: Ensure that the cutting depth reaches the substrate and avoid cutting too shallow or too deep.

Adhesive tape selection: Use adhesive tape with specified adhesive strength to ensure consistency of test results.

Operating standards: Strictly follow the standard operation to avoid human error.

Grid test is a simple and effective method widely used in the quality control and evaluation of coatings, coatings, and films. Through this experiment, the adhesion performance of the coating can be quickly understood, providing important references for material selection and process optimization.
