Consumer Product Testing Services - SDS Section

A safety data sheet (SDS) is a document that contains data related to a substance. In the latest national recommended standard GB/T 16483-2008 "Safety Data Sheet for Chemicals - Content and Order of Items" implemented by China on February 1, 2009, MSDS was renamed SDS and the Chinese name is "Chemical Safety Data Sheet".

Product management and workplace safety are very important components of it. Its purpose is to provide workers and emergency responders with a safe way to handle this substance. It also contains some other information about this substance, such as physical and chemical properties such as melting point, boiling point, flash point, toxicity, health effects, first aid, reaction, storage, disposal, protective equipment, leak handling, and explosive performance. The format of this manual depends on the relevant regulations of the country where it is located.

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a document that contains safety information related to chemicals, aimed at providing detailed information for workers, emergency responders, and other relevant personnel to safely handle chemicals. The following is a detailed explanation about SDS:

1. SDS Overview

Full name: Safety Data Sheet.

Chinese name: Chemical Safety Technical Data Sheet.

Purpose: To provide safety information on chemicals and ensure their safety during production, storage, transportation, and use.

Scope of application: Applicable to all chemicals, including industrial chemicals, household chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc.

2. The main content of SDS

According to the Chinese national standard GB/T 16483-2008, SDS consists of the following 16 parts:

Chemical and enterprise identification:

Chemical name, supplier information, emergency contact phone number, etc.

Hazard Overview:

The main hazards and warning information of chemicals.

Ingredients/Composition Information:

The composition and concentration of chemicals.

Emergency measures:

First aid methods for inhalation, skin contact, eye contact, and ingestion.

Fire prevention measures

The explosive performance, fire extinguishing methods, and fire precautions of chemicals.

Emergency response to leakage:

Emergency response methods after chemical leakage.

Handling and Storage:

Precautions for handling chemicals and storage conditions.

Contact control/personal protection:

Exposure limits for chemicals and personal protective equipment.

Physical and chemical properties:

The physical and chemical properties of chemicals, such as melting point, boiling point, flash point, density, etc.

Stability and reactivity:

The stability and potential hazardous reactions of chemicals.

Toxicological information:

Toxicity data of chemicals and their impact on health.

Ecological information:

The potential impact of chemicals on the environment.

Disposal of waste

Methods for handling chemical waste.

Transportation information:

Transportation precautions and classification of chemicals.

Regulatory information:

Regulations and standards related to chemicals.

Other information:

Other relevant information, such as references, revision dates, etc.

3. Format of SDS

International standards: According to the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), the format and content of SDS tend to be standardized globally.

Chinese standard: According to GB/T 16483-2008, the format and content of SDS must comply with relevant regulations in China.

The Importance of SDS

(1) Security management

Workplace safety: SDS provides workers with chemical safety information to ensure appropriate protective measures are taken during operations.

Emergency response: SDS provides emergency response methods for chemicals for emergency medical personnel, reducing the harm caused by accidents.

(2) Regulatory compliance

Legal requirement: Many countries and regions require chemical suppliers to provide SDS to ensure the safe use of chemicals.

Clear responsibility: SDS clarifies the safety information of chemicals, which helps companies fulfill their legal responsibilities.

(3) Information transmission

Supply chain management: SDS conveys safety information of chemicals in the supply chain, ensuring that upstream and downstream enterprises understand the hazards and protective measures of chemicals.

Consumer Protection: SDS provides consumers with safety information on chemicals to ensure their proper use.

5. Writing and updating SDS

Writing: Chemical suppliers are required to prepare SDS in accordance with relevant regulations and standards to ensure its accuracy and completeness.

Update: SDS should be updated promptly when there are changes in the composition, hazard information, or regulations of chemicals.

6. Summary

SDS is an important tool for chemical safety management, providing detailed safety information of chemicals to ensure their safety during production, storage, transportation, and use. Enterprises need to prepare and update SDS in accordance with relevant regulations and standards to ensure its accuracy and completeness, fulfill legal responsibilities, and protect the safety of workers, consumers, and the environment.
