Shore hardness

Under specific conditions, a specific shaped indenter is pressed into the specimen to form a pressing depth, which is then converted into hardness

Test purpose
Evaluate the hardness of materials (such as rubber, plastic, etc.) by measuring the depth at which a specific shaped indenter is pressed into the specimen under specific conditions and converting it into a hardness value.

Test Standard
According to the standard:

ISO 7619: Determination of Shore hardness of rubber

ASTM D2240: Determination of Shore Hardness of Rubber and Plastics

GB/T 531: Rubber Determination of Shore Hardness

Test Principle
Under specific conditions, press a specific shaped indenter into the surface of the specimen, measure the depth of penetration, and convert it into a Shore hardness value. The higher the Shore hardness value, the harder the material.

test equipment
Shore hardness tester (divided into A type, D type, etc., suitable for different hardness ranges)

Standard pressure needle (Type A is conical, Type D is pointed)

Sample holder

Calibration block (used for calibrating hardness tester)

Test steps
Sample preparation:

Prepare standard specimens with a thickness that meets the testing requirements (usually 6mm or more).

Record the initial state of the sample (taking photos, measuring thickness, etc.).

Test condition settings:

Hardness tester type: Select according to the hardness range of the material (type A is suitable for soft materials, type D is suitable for hard materials).

Test pressure: Set according to the standard (1kgf for type A and 5kgf for type D).

Test time: Set according to the standard (usually 15 seconds).

Test Run:

Place the sample on a flat and hard surface.

Press the hardness tester vertically onto the surface of the specimen, ensuring that the indenter is in contact with the specimen.

Apply the prescribed pressure and maintain it for the prescribed time.

Read the Shore hardness value displayed on the hardness tester.

Test completed:

Record the Shore hardness value.

Check the surface indentation of the specimen.

Result evaluation:

Record the Shore hardness values (such as Shore A hardness and Shore D hardness).

Check whether there are obvious indentations or damages on the surface of the sample.

Precautions
Ensure that the hardness tester is pressed vertically onto the surface of the specimen to avoid measurement errors caused by tilting.

Before testing, a calibration block should be used to calibrate the hardness tester to ensure measurement accuracy.

The surface of the sample should be smooth to avoid unevenness that may affect the test results.

Test Record
Record the testing conditions (hardness tester type, testing pressure, testing time, etc.).

Record the initial state of the sample (taking photos, measuring thickness, etc.).

Record the Shore hardness value and the surface condition of the sample.

Conclusion
Based on the test results, evaluate the hardness performance of the material and issue a test report. Through this test, important basis can be provided for material selection, product design, and process improvement, ensuring that the performance of the product meets the requirements in practical applications.
