DECT product testing

The Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) system is an enhanced digital cordless telephone standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. It is an open and evolving digital communication standard primarily used in cordless telephone systems.

Overview of DECT System
Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) is a wireless communication standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in 1992, specifically designed for short-range voice and data transmission. Its core goal is to provide high-quality, low-power, and high security cordless communication solutions, widely used in home, enterprise, and Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios.

Core technical characteristics
Frequency band and modulation

Working frequency band: 1880-1900 MHz globally allocated (mainly in Europe), with some countries extending to 1900-1920 MHz or 1910-1930 MHz.

Channel allocation: Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) are used, supporting 10 RF channels with a bandwidth of 1.728 MHz per channel.

Modulation method: Gaussian frequency shift keying (GFSK), supports voice and data transmission.

Coverage and Capacity

Coverage range: Typical indoor coverage is 50-100 meters, and outdoor coverage can reach up to 300 meters (unobstructed).

Multi user support: A single base station can simultaneously handle 12 full duplex calls and dynamically allocate time slots to improve efficiency.

safety

Authentication encryption: Supports bidirectional identity authentication (base station and terminal) and AES-128 encryption to prevent

eavesdropping and illegal access.

Dynamic Channel Selection (DCS): Automatically avoids interference frequency bands to ensure communication stability.

Main application scenarios
Family and Business Communication

Cordless telephone system: The core use of DECT, providing high-definition voice (such as DECT CAT iq standard) and long standby time (the terminal can reach several weeks).

Enterprise level PBX system: supports seamless roaming and multi base station networking, suitable for scenarios such as hospitals, hotels, warehouses, etc.

Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Home

DECT Ultra Low Energy (ULE): a low-power version optimized for IoT (standby power<1mW), used for smart door locks, sensors, security devices, and more.

DECT-2020 NR: 5G Fusion Standard, supports massive machine communication (mMTC) and ultra-low latency (<10ms), suitable for industrial automation.

private network

Medical monitoring: wireless electrocardiogram (ECG), infusion pump control, etc., relying on the high reliability and anti-interference ability of DECT.

Building automation: wireless control of lighting and temperature control systems.

Comparison between DECT and other wireless technologies
Technical frequency band coverage, power consumption, typical application advantages and limitations
DECT 1.8-1.9 GHz 50-300 meter low voice IoT、 Enterprise communication with high voice quality, strong anti-interference, and standardization
Wi Fi 2.4/5GHz 50-100m medium to high bandwidth data and video streaming, high bandwidth but with high interference and power consumption
Bluetooth 2.4 GHz 10-100 meter ultra-low personal device interconnection (headphones, keyboard and mouse) short distance, point-to-point, weak networking capability
Zigbee 2.4 GHz 10-100 meter ultra-low sensor network, smart home low speed, Mesh network support

The Evolution and Future of DECT
DECT-2020 NR

In 2021, it was included in the 3GPP 5G standard (Release 16) and supports flexible bandwidth from 1.4 MHz to 7 MHz, suitable for industrial IoT and mission critical communication.

Features: Ultra high density connection (1M devices/km ²), end-to-end latency<10ms, 99.999% reliability.

market trend

Smart Home Integration: Integrating ULE protocol with Matter standard to become a universal connectivity solution for cross brand smart devices.

Enterprise digital transformation: Combining DECT with VoIP and 5G private networks to enhance mobile office efficiency.

summary
DECT continues to develop in traditional voice communication and emerging IoT fields due to its low power consumption, high reliability, and standardization advantages. With the promotion of DECT-2020 NR, it may play a more critical role in Industry 4.0 and smart cities in the future.
