High current injection (BCI) test

A method of simulating interference sources in the frequency range of 0.1~400MHz and directly inducing current to the connecting wire harness through a current injection probe for anti-interference testing

Test purpose

Evaluate the anti-interference performance of electronic devices in electromagnetic interference environments.

Ensure that the equipment can function properly under electromagnetic interference.

Identify potential failure risks of equipment in electromagnetic interference environments.

Test Principle

BCI testing uses a current injection probe to directly induce high-frequency interference current onto the device's connecting harness, simulating electromagnetic interference in actual environments. During the testing process, observe whether the equipment experiences performance degradation or malfunctions.

test frequency

Typical frequency range: 0.1 MHz to 400 MHz.

Focus on frequency bands:

0.1 MHz~30 MHz: Low frequency interference, mainly from power and signal lines.

30 MHz~400 MHz: High frequency interference, mainly from wireless communication and switching power supplies.

test equipment

Signal generator:

Used to generate interference signals of specific frequency and intensity.

Power amplifier:

Used to amplify the output signal of the signal generator.

Current injection probe:

Used to induce interference current onto the connection harness of the device.

Current monitoring probe:

Used to measure the intensity of injected current and ensure the accuracy of testing conditions.

Receiver or spectrum analyzer:

Used to monitor the frequency and intensity of interference signals.

Control software:

Used to set test parameters such as frequency, intensity, and duration.

Shielding room or test bench:

Provide a testing environment without external interference.

Test steps

Preparation:

Install the device under test (DUT) on the test bench and connect all necessary cables and power sources.

Ensure that the equipment is in normal working condition.

Set up testing environment:

Install signal generators, power amplifiers, current injection probes, and monitoring probes in shielded rooms or test benches.

Calibrate the current injection probe to ensure that the intensity of the injected current meets the testing requirements.

Conduct testing:

Start the tested device and put it in typical working mode.

Use a signal generator and power amplifier to generate interference signals of specific frequency and intensity.

By injecting current into the probe, the interference current is induced onto the connection harness of the device.

Observe the performance changes of the equipment and record any abnormalities or malfunctions.

data analysis

Analyze test data and evaluate the anti-interference performance of the equipment.

Determine whether the equipment is qualified according to the standard limit.

Test Standard

ISO 11452-4: Road vehicles - Test methods for narrowband radiated electromagnetic energy immunity - Part 4: High current injection (BCI) method.

SAE J1113-4: Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing of Automotive Electronic Equipment - High Current Injection Method.

test conditions

Injected current intensity: usually 10 mA~100 mA, the specific intensity depends on the testing standards and application scenarios.

Test frequency: 0.1 MHz~400 MHz.

Testing time: Each frequency point lasts for several seconds to minutes, depending on the testing standards.

Precautions

Test environment: Ensure that there is no external interference in the shielded room or test bench.

Equipment status: Ensure that the tested equipment is in a typical working state, covering all possible working modes.

Probe calibration: Regularly calibrate the current injection probe and monitoring probe to ensure the accuracy of testing conditions.

Safety protection: During the testing process, attention should be paid to the potential impact of high-frequency currents on the human body and necessary protective measures should be taken.

Common problems and solutions

Equipment performance degradation:

Reason: Unreasonable circuit design, insufficient shielding, inadequate filtering, etc.

Solution: Optimize circuit design, add shielding measures, and use filters.

The test results are unstable:

Reason: External interference, unstable device operation status.

Solution: Test in a shielded environment to ensure consistent device operation.

Application field

Automotive electronics: in car entertainment systems, engine control units (ECUs), sensors, etc.

Industrial electronics: industrial controllers, motor drivers, etc.

Consumer electronics: smart devices, household appliances, etc.

Conclusion

High current injection (BCI) testing is an important means of evaluating the anti-interference performance of electronic devices in electromagnetic interference environments. By simulating electromagnetic interference in actual environments, potential risks of equipment in actual working environments can be identified and necessary improvement measures can be taken. During the testing process, attention should be paid to the testing environment, equipment status, and probe calibration to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test results.
