Shell pressure test

Place one end face of a 30mm diameter cylinder on the top, bottom, and side of the battery casing, and apply a force of 250N on the other end face of the cylinder for 60 seconds. Visually inspect the appearance of the battery pack

Shell pressure testing is an important testing method for evaluating the structural integrity and safety of battery casings under external pressure. By simulating the reaction of the battery casing under local pressure, detect whether the battery will undergo dangerous situations such as deformation, rupture, and leakage. The following is the detailed content of the shell pressure test:

1. Test purpose

Evaluate the structural integrity and safety of the battery casing when subjected to external pressure.

Ensure that the battery casing does not deform, rupture, leak, or other dangerous situations when subjected to local pressure.

Verify whether the battery meets relevant safety standards and requirements.

2. Testing principle

By placing one end of a cylindrical body with a diameter of 30mm at different positions (top, bottom, side) on the battery casing and applying a force of 250N on the other end for 60 seconds, the appearance and structural integrity of the battery casing are inspected.

3. Testing methods

(1) Test preparation

Prepare a cylinder with a diameter of 30mm and a pressure application device.

Ensure that the battery is in an uncharged state to avoid danger during the testing process.

(2) Shell pressure test

Place one end face of the cylinder on the top, bottom, and side of the battery casing.

Apply a force of 250N on the other end face of the cylinder and maintain it for 60 seconds.

Record the test results for each location.

(3) Check after testing

Check whether the battery casing is deformed, cracked, leaking, or not.

Observe whether there are any dangerous situations such as fire or explosion in the battery.

Measure the voltage and internal resistance of the battery to evaluate whether its electrical performance is normal.

4. Testing standards

International standards:

IEC 62133 (Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary batteries).

UN 38.3 (Safety testing for transportation of lithium batteries).

Industry standards:

GB 31241 (Safety Requirements for Lithium ion Batteries for Portable Electronic Products, China).

UL 1642 (Lithium Battery Safety Standard, USA).

5. Testing equipment

A cylinder with a diameter of 30mm: used to apply local pressure.

Pressure application equipment: used to accurately apply a force of 250N.

Voltage and internal resistance tester: used to measure the electrical performance of batteries.

Infrared thermal imaging device: used to monitor the temperature changes of batteries during pressure testing.

6. Data analysis and evaluation

Appearance inspection: Record whether the battery casing is deformed, cracked, leaking, etc.

Safety assessment: Observe whether the battery has any dangerous situations such as fire or explosion.

Electrical performance: Measure the voltage and internal resistance of the battery to evaluate whether its electrical performance is normal.

7. Common problems and solutions

Shell deformation: It may be due to insufficient strength of the shell material, and a higher strength material needs to be replaced.

Shell rupture: It may be due to unreasonable shell design, and the shell structure design needs to be optimized.

Leakage: It may be due to insufficient battery sealing, and the sealing design of the battery needs to be improved.

8. Application scenarios

Battery testing for consumer electronics products such as mobile phones, laptops, and tablets.

Electric tools: such as battery testing for electric drills and chainsaws.

Electric vehicles: such as testing of electric vehicle power batteries.

Energy storage system: such as testing of solar energy storage batteries.

9. Test report

Testing conditions: including pressure level, holding time, testing location, etc.

Test results: including appearance inspection results, safety assessment, electrical performance, etc.

Conclusion and Suggestions: Evaluate whether the sample meets the relevant standards and propose improvement suggestions.

Through shell pressure testing, the structural integrity and safety of the battery casing under external pressure can be comprehensively evaluated, ensuring that it can meet safety requirements in practical use and providing scientific basis for battery design and optimization.
