withstanding voltage

Test the insulation withstand voltage capability of the dielectric in the sample. This experiment requires only systems/components containing inductive elements (such as relays, motors, coils) or connected to inductive load circuits. The leakage current generated by high voltage through an electric field between electrically isolated components may have an impact on insulation performance. This experiment focuses on insulation systems and tests the ability of insulation materials to withstand high voltages generated by disconnecting inductive loads.

Voltage endurance testing (also known as high voltage testing or dielectric strength testing) is a testing method used to evaluate the withstand ability of equipment or component insulation systems under high voltage conditions. This test is particularly suitable for systems/components containing inductive components (such as relays, motors, coils) or connected to inductive load circuits, aiming to verify whether insulation materials can withstand high voltage generated by disconnecting inductive loads under high voltage conditions without breakdown or flashover. The following are the key elements and steps of withstand voltage testing:

1. Test objectives
Insulation withstand voltage capability: Verify the insulation material's ability to withstand high voltage.

Safety: Ensure that the equipment will not breakdown or flash under high voltage conditions, avoiding the risk of electric shock or fire.

Reliability: Evaluate the ability of an insulation system to withstand high voltage when disconnecting inductive loads.

2. Testing conditions
Test voltage: determined according to the insulation level and application standards of the equipment or components (such as AC 1500V, DC 3000V).

Test time: Usually 1 minute, some standards allow for a shorter time but require an increase in voltage (such as a 5-second test).

Environmental conditions: Test under standard conditions (such as temperature of 25 ° C and humidity of 50%), or simulate extreme environments for additional testing.

3. Testing equipment
Voltage tester: Provides stable high voltage and monitors leakage current.

High voltage probe: used to connect testing instruments and equipment.

Data logger: Record the voltage and leakage current values during the testing process.

4. Testing steps
prepare

Confirm that the device is powered off to ensure safe testing.

Clean the surface of the equipment to ensure that there is no dust or moisture affecting the test results.

Connection tester:

Connect the high voltage end of the voltage tester to the live parts of the equipment.

Connect the grounding terminal of the tester to the casing or grounding terminal of the device.

Set parameters:

Set the test voltage and time according to the insulation level of the equipment or component.

Set the leakage current threshold (usually 5mA or 10mA).

Applied voltage:

Slowly increase the voltage to the specified value and maintain it for the specified time.

monitor:

Observe whether breakdown, flashover, or leakage current exceeds the threshold.

Judgment:

If no breakdown or flashover occurs and the leakage current does not exceed the limit, the test passes.

5. Judgment criteria
Insulation withstand voltage: The equipment does not experience breakdown or flashover under high voltage.

Leakage current: The leakage current does not exceed the specified threshold (such as 5mA).

Stability: During the testing period, the insulation system should remain stable without significant changes.

6. Improvement measures
Material optimization: Choose insulation materials with higher dielectric strength.

Structural design: Increase creepage distance and electrical clearance.

Process improvement: Ensure that the insulation material is free of defects such as bubbles and cracks.

Environmental protection: Increase moisture-proof and dust-proof measures to improve insulation performance.

7. Common standards
IEC 60664-1: Insulation Coordination Standard for Equipment in Low Voltage Systems.

IEC 60950-1: Information Technology Equipment Safety Standard.

GB 4706.1: Safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances.

UL 60950-1: American Information Technology Equipment Security Standard.

8. Precautions
Testing safety: Ensure that the equipment is powered off during testing, and operators must wear insulated protective equipment.

Slow voltage rise: To avoid misjudgment or equipment damage caused by sudden voltage rise.

Environmental control: Avoid testing in high humidity or high pollution environments.

Regular calibration: Ensure the accuracy and reliability of the voltage tester.

Through voltage endurance testing, the insulation system of equipment or components can be verified for its ability to withstand high voltage conditions, ensuring that it will not break down or flashover when disconnecting inductive loads, and ensuring the safety of equipment and users.
