Cold and hot shock tests, also known as temperature shock tests or high and low temperature shock tests, are used to assess the adaptability of products to rapid changes in ambient temperature. They are essential tests in equipment design and batch production stages, and can also be used for environmental stress screening tests in some cases. It can be said that the frequency of application of cold and hot shock test chambers in verifying and improving the environmental adaptability of equipment is second only to vibration and high and low temperature tests.

Purpose of Thermal Shock Test

Verify the condition of the sample during use and storage under rapidly changing conditions of high and low temperatures.

Principle of Thermal Shock Test

When the temperature changes sharply, alternating stress is caused by thermal expansion and contraction effects, resulting in material cracking, poor contact, and performance changes.

Method for Thermal Shock Test

Before the experiment, the mechanical properties (appearance and internal structure) and electrical properties of the test sample should be checked to ensure that the mechanical and electrical properties of the sample are normal.

Arrange the samples reasonably in the cold and hot shock chamber, leaving sufficient space between the sample and the four walls of the temperature chamber for air circulation. Select the cold and hot shock test conditions according to standard specifications.

Select the hot and cold shock test starting from high temperature, and press the start button to initiate the hot and cold shock test. The experiment will automatically stop after the set number of cycles.

After the experiment is completed, remove the sample from the cold and hot shock chamber and allow it to recover at room temperature until the sample temperature stabilizes. Observe the samples after the experiment for any mechanical damage (such as surface warping, cracking, loose components, detachment, etc.) and check for any abnormalities in electrical performance.

If the mechanical damage or electrical performance indicators of the sample mentioned above do not meet the relevant specifications, it is considered that the sample is also damaged, and a detailed test record form should be filled out.

Analyze the weak links exposed in the experiment and propose improvement measures. Repair or improve the sample. If there is no damage, increase the temperature shock level and continue testing according to the standard temperature shock test conditions, using ordinary components made of board grade or surface mounted components made of board grade, until the sample is damaged.
