Melt Index

Measure the mass or volume of thermoplastic melt flowing out of a mold with a specified diameter within 10 minutes at a certain temperature and load

The Melt Flow Index (MFI) or Melt Flow Rate (MFR) is an important indicator for measuring the flowability of thermoplastic materials at specific temperatures and loads. It represents the mass (usually in grams) or volume (usually in cubic centimeters) of plastic melt flowing out through a die of specified diameter and length within 10 minutes.

Measurement principle
The determination of melt index is based on the following conditions:

Temperature: Set according to the material type, usually at 190 ° C or 230 ° C.

Load: The standard load is 2.16 kg, but other loads such as 5 kg or 10 kg can also be used.

Mouth mold: The diameter is usually 2.095 mm and the length is 8 mm.

measurement procedure
Preheating: Load plastic pellets or powder into the barrel of the melt index meter and preheat to the set temperature.

Loading: Apply a specified load (such as 2.16 kg) to the top of the barrel.

Extrusion: Melt is extruded through a die under load.

Collection: Collect the extruded melt within a specified time frame (usually 10 minutes).

Weighing: Measure the collected mass of the melt, or calculate the flow rate by volume.

calculation formula
The formula for calculating the melt index (MFI) is:

MFI=mass of extruded melt (g) time (min) MFI=mass of extruded melt (g) time (min)

Usually expressed as "g/10min".

influencing factors
Temperature: As the temperature increases, the fluidity of the melt increases and the MFI increases.

Load: As the load increases, the fluidity of the melt increases, and the MFI increases.

Material properties: Molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, additives, etc. can all affect MFI.

application
The melt index is widely used for:

Quality control: Evaluate the processing performance of plastic materials.

Material selection: Choose suitable materials based on processing conditions.

Process optimization: Adjust processing parameters to adapt to the fluidity of materials.

Precautions
Sample preparation: Ensure that the sample is dry and free of impurities.

Instrument calibration: Regularly calibrate instruments to ensure measurement accuracy.

Operating standards: Strictly follow the standard operation to avoid human error.

The melt index is an important parameter in plastic processing and material selection, helping producers and researchers better understand and control the flow characteristics of materials.
