Voltage drop interruption

Simulate the instantaneous voltage drop and interruption caused by faults in low, medium, or high voltage networks (short circuits or ground faults); And the voltage changes caused by continuous changes in the load connected to the power grid.

Voltage Dips, Interruptions, and Variations Test is an important component of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing, used to simulate the transient voltage drops, interruptions, or changes that equipment may encounter in actual usage environments. This interference is usually caused by faults in low, medium, or high voltage networks (such as short circuits or ground faults), or may be voltage fluctuations caused by continuous changes in the load connected to the grid (such as the start or stop of large equipment). The purpose of this test is to evaluate the anti-interference performance of the equipment under test (EUT) under abnormal voltage conditions.

Test purpose
The main purpose of voltage drop and interruption testing is to verify whether the equipment can maintain normal function without performance degradation, misoperation, or damage during transient drops, interruptions, or changes in grid voltage. This is crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of equipment, especially in fields such as industrial control, medical equipment, data centers, and communication systems.

Test Standard
Voltage drop and interruption testing is usually conducted according to international or industry standards, and common standards include:

IEC 61000-4-11: Standard for voltage drop, short interruption, and voltage variation immunity testing developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

EN 61000-4-11: European standard, consistent with the content of IEC 61000-4-11.

GB/T 17626.11: Chinese National Standard, equivalent to IEC 61000-4-11.

test method
Test environment:

Testing is typically conducted in a laboratory environment using specialized voltage drop and interruption simulators.

The testing environment should avoid external electromagnetic interference to ensure the accuracy of the test results.

Test equipment:

Voltage sag and interruption simulator: used to simulate instantaneous voltage dips, interruptions, or changes in the power grid.

Monitoring equipment: used to monitor the working status and performance of the tested equipment.

Test steps:

Connect the test equipment to the voltage drop and interruption simulator, and connect the necessary power and signal lines.

Set the parameters of the simulator according to the testing standards:

Voltage drop amplitude: usually 0%, 40%, 70%, or 80% of the rated voltage.

Voltage drop duration: usually 10 ms, 20 ms, 50 ms, 100 ms, 200 ms, 500 ms or longer.

Voltage interruption time: usually 1 s, 3 s, 5 s or longer.

Voltage variation amplitude: Simulate slow changes in grid voltage (such as ± 10% or ± 20%).

Gradually apply different voltage drops, interruptions, or changes to observe whether the tested equipment experiences performance degradation, misoperation, or damage.

Record the test results, including the response of the tested equipment and any abnormal phenomena.

Test parameters:

Voltage drop amplitude: 0% (complete interruption), 40%, 70%, 80%, etc.

Voltage drop duration: 10 ms, 20 ms, 50 ms, 100 ms, 200 ms, 500 ms, etc.

Voltage interruption time: 1 s, 3 s, 5 s, etc.

Voltage variation amplitude: ± 10%, ± 20%, etc.

Test result evaluation
According to the standard, the tested equipment should maintain normal operation during the testing process without significant performance degradation or functional failure.

Failure criteria: If the device experiences performance degradation, misoperation, or damage during testing, it will be considered a test failure.

Rectification measures: For devices that have not passed the test, the following measures may need to be taken:

Add power filter circuit.

Use uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or voltage regulator.

Optimize the power management design of the equipment.

Application field
Voltage drop and interruption testing is widely used in the following fields:

Industrial equipment: such as PLC, frequency converter, industrial robots, etc.

Medical equipment: such as electrocardiographs, ultrasound devices, etc.

Data center: such as servers, storage devices, etc.

Communication system: such as base stations, routers, etc.

Consumer electronics: such as computers, household appliances, etc.

Test significance
Through voltage drop and interruption testing, it can be ensured that the equipment can still operate stably under abnormal grid voltage conditions, meet regulatory requirements, and improve user satisfaction. This is of great significance for ensuring the continuous operation of key equipment and reducing losses caused by power grid problems.
