EMS Testing - Electrostatic Discharge

Purpose of the test:

Test the immunity of the sample to static electricity

Test Criteria:

ISO 10605, electrostatic testing of major car manufacturers

Test Capability:

Meet the requirements of the car factory for electrostatic discharge, and the strength reaches 30kV. It also matches four resistance-capacitance networks. IEC 61000-4-2 (150pF/330 Ohm) ISO 10605 (150pF/2000 Ohm, 330pF / 2000 Ohm, 330pF/330 Ohm)

EMS Testing - Detailed Explanation of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Immunity Testing
Electrostatic discharge immunity testing is one of the core items of EMS (Electromagnetic Immunity) testing, aimed at evaluating the tolerance of electrical and electronic equipment or systems to external electrostatic discharge events. Here are the key points:

1、 Testing standards and methods
International standards:

IEC 61000-4-2: specifies test levels, waveforms, equipment layout, and methods for evaluating results.
GB/T 17626.2: Equivalent to IEC 61000-4-2, applicable to domestic products in China.
ISO 10605: Specialized standard for automotive electronics.
Testing method:

Contact discharge: Apply discharge to the conductive surface of the device, simulating direct human contact.
Air discharge: Simulate discharge on insulation surfaces or gaps, simulating human discharge through air.
Test level:

Contact discharge: ± 4kV (information technology equipment).
Air discharge: ± 8kV (for information technology equipment).

2、 Testing process
Preparation stage:

Place the device under test (EUT) on an insulated support and connect it to the grounding reference plane.
Set up testing environment: temperature (23 ± 5) ℃, humidity (45-75)% RH.
Test execution:

Simulate the discharge waveform of the human body metal model (HBM) using an electrostatic discharge generator (ESD Gun).
Monitor EUT functional parameters (such as communication signals, screen displays, etc.).
Performance criteria:

Grade A: During and after testing, all functions meet the design specifications.
B-level: Function temporarily degraded during testing, automatically restored after testing.
C-level: Function degradation during testing, requiring manual intervention for recovery.

3、 Testing equipment and environment
Equipment:

Electrostatic discharge generator: Output voltage range ± 0.2kV - ± 30kV.
Grounding reference plane: with an area of 2m × 2m, thin copper strips are used for grounding.
Horizontal coupling plate (HCP) and vertical coupling plate (VCP): used to construct standard test bench layouts.
Environment:

Radio anechoic chamber: Shielding external interference.
Reverberation chamber: Simulate complex electromagnetic environments.

4、 Typical Applications and Improvements
Car navigation:

Problem: RF radiation causes positioning drift and screen flickering.
Rectification: Block the radiation coupling path, optimize shielding and grounding.
ECU module:

Problem: High frequency band (800MHz~2GHz) GPS/Bluetooth communication packet loss.
Rectification: Enhance the anti-interference capability of sensitive circuits and add filtering circuits.

5、 Test result evaluation
Grade A: During and after testing, all functions meet the design specifications.
B-level: Function temporarily degraded during testing, automatically restored after testing.
C-level: Function degradation during testing, requiring manual intervention for recovery.

Summary: Electrostatic discharge immunity testing is a key step in ensuring the stable operation of equipment under electromagnetic interference. It is necessary to strictly follow international and national standards and optimize them based on practical application scenarios.
