Light intensity test

The luminous flux emitted by a light source within a unit solid angle, which is the density of the luminous flux emitted by the light source in a selected direction in space. The larger the angle, the lower the luminous intensity. Unit: Candela (cd).

Luminous Intensity is a physical quantity that describes the intensity of light emitted by a light source in a specific direction, defined as the amount of light emitted by the light source per unit solid angle. Its unit is Candela (cd). The following is a detailed explanation of the light intensity test:

1. Definition of light intensity

2. The relationship between light intensity and solid angle
Stereoscopic angle: represents the distribution range of light rays in space, measured in spherical degrees (sr).

Light intensity distribution: The light intensity varies with the angle, usually the larger the angle, the smaller the light intensity.

3. Light intensity testing method
Light intensity testing usually uses a distributed photometer, and the steps are as follows:

Fixed light source: Install the light source on the testing equipment, ensuring its position and direction are fixed.

Measure luminous flux: Use a photometric probe to measure the luminous flux of a light source in a specific direction.

Calculate solid angle: Calculate the solid angle based on the distance and area between the measurement direction and the light source.

Calculate light intensity: Divide the luminous flux by the solid angle to obtain the light intensity in that direction.

4. Light intensity distribution curve
The results of light intensity testing are usually represented by the light intensity distribution curve (light distribution curve):

Polar coordinate diagram: suitable for symmetrical light sources, with angles representing direction and radii representing intensity.

Cartesian coordinate diagram: suitable for asymmetric light sources, with the horizontal axis representing angles and the vertical axis representing light intensity.

5. Application of Light Intensity Testing
Lighting Design: Help designers understand the intensity distribution of light sources and optimize lighting solutions.

Lamp performance evaluation: Evaluate the luminous efficiency and uniformity of light intensity of the lamp.

Standard compliance: used to verify whether the lighting fixtures comply with the light intensity distribution standards (such as EN 13032).

6. Factors affecting light intensity
Light source type: Different light sources such as LED and halogen lamps have different light intensity characteristics.

Optical design: Reflectors, lenses, and other optical components can affect the distribution of light intensity.

Measurement distance: The farther the measurement distance, the lower the light intensity.

7. Precautions for Light Intensity Testing
Dark room environment: Testing should be conducted in a dark room to avoid external light interference.

Calibration equipment: Before testing, it is necessary to calibrate the spectrophotometer and photometric probe.

Multi point measurement: Measure light intensity in multiple directions to comprehensively understand the light intensity distribution of the light source.

8. The relationship between light intensity and lighting effect
High light intensity: suitable for long-distance illumination or highlighting key areas.

Low light intensity: suitable for large-area lighting or creating a soft atmosphere.

Through light intensity testing, the emission characteristics of light sources can be accurately understood, providing scientific basis for lighting design and lamp selection.
