Dielectric strength test

According to different insulation levels, the equipment needs to meet the corresponding high-voltage test values, and insulation breakdown and flashover are not allowed during the test process

The electrical strength test (also known as withstand voltage test or high voltage test) is a key test to evaluate the insulation performance of equipment, ensuring that the equipment can withstand the specified high voltage at different insulation levels without insulation breakdown or flashover. The following are the key elements and steps of the electrical strength test:

1. Test objectives
Insulation strength: Verify the tolerance of equipment insulation materials under high voltage.

Safety: Ensure that the equipment will not breakdown or flash under high voltage conditions, avoiding the risk of electric shock or fire.

Compliant with standards: Meet the requirements of relevant electrical safety standards.

2. Testing conditions
Test voltage: Determine the test voltage based on the equipment insulation level and application standards (such as AC 1500V or DC 3000V).

Test time: Usually 1 minute, some standards allow for a shorter time but require an increase in voltage (such as a 5-second test).

Environmental conditions: Test under standard conditions (such as temperature of 25 ° C and humidity of 50%), or simulate extreme environments for additional testing.

3. Testing equipment
Voltage tester: Provides stable high voltage and monitors leakage current.

Insulation resistance tester: used for measuring insulation resistance before and after testing.

Protective devices: such as emergency stop buttons and overcurrent protection devices to ensure testing safety.

4. Testing methods
prepare

Confirm that the device is powered off to ensure safe testing.

Clean the surface of the equipment to ensure that there is no dust or moisture affecting the test results.

Connection tester:

Connect the high voltage end of the voltage tester to the live parts of the equipment.

Connect the grounding terminal of the tester to the casing or grounding terminal of the device.

Set parameters:

Set the test voltage and time according to the insulation level of the equipment.

Set the leakage current threshold (usually 5mA or 10mA).

Applied voltage:

Slowly increase the voltage to the specified value and maintain it for the specified time.

monitor:

Observe whether breakdown, flashover, or leakage current exceeds the threshold.

Judgment:

If no breakdown or flashover occurs and the leakage current does not exceed the limit, the test passes.

5. Test voltage selection
Basic insulation: usually AC 1000V+2 times the rated voltage.

Double insulation or reinforced insulation: usually AC 3000V or higher.

Low voltage equipment: usually AC 500V or DC 1000V.

High voltage equipment: determined according to specific standards (such as IEC 60601 requirements for medical equipment).

6. Improvement measures
Optimize insulation materials: Choose insulation materials with higher dielectric strength.

Improve structural design: increase creepage distance and electrical clearance.

Process improvement: Ensure that the insulation material is free of defects such as bubbles and cracks.

Environmental protection: Increase moisture-proof and dust-proof measures to improve insulation performance.

7. Common standards
IEC 60950-1: Information Technology Equipment Safety Standard.

IEC 60601-1: Safety standard for medical electrical equipment.

GB 4706.1: Safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances.

UL 60950-1: American Information Technology Equipment Security Standard.

8. Precautions
Testing safety: Ensure that the equipment is powered off during testing, and operators must wear insulated protective equipment.

Slow voltage rise: To avoid misjudgment or equipment damage caused by sudden voltage rise.

Environmental control: Avoid testing in high humidity or high pollution environments.

Regular calibration: Ensure the accuracy and reliability of the voltage tester.

By conducting electrical strength tests, it is possible to verify whether the insulation performance of the equipment meets safety requirements, ensuring that the equipment will not experience breakdown or flashover under high voltage conditions, and guaranteeing the safety of the equipment and users.
