C-Tick certification

C-Tick certification is a mandatory certification requirement in Australia for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of electronic and electrical products, aimed at preventing electronic devices from interfering with wireless communication frequency bands and ensuring the normal operation of wireless communication systems. As a key part of improving the compliance system in the Australia New Zealand market, understanding the technical details and implementation path of C-Tick will directly affect product access efficiency and supply chain stability.

1、 The core position of C-Tick certification is that it is still a hard threshold for market access, but has been integrated into the RCM system

C-Tick certification itself does not exist independently, but is a core component of the EMC part of the RCM compliance system. Although the RCM mark has been integrated with C-Tick, A-Tick, and SAA as a unified market access mark since March 1, 2016, all electronic products related to electromagnetic compatibility must still complete the testing and document preparation required by C-Tick in order to legally affix the RCM mark.

✅  In short: Not doing C-Tick=unable to use RCM in compliance=product cannot enter the Australia New Zealand market

2、 Applicable product scope of C-Tick certification

According to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) regulations, the following electronic and electrical products must meet C-Tick/EMC requirements:

Household appliances (such as refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves)
Information technology equipment (computers, printers, routers)
Lighting equipment (LED lights, ballasts)
Industrial, Scientific, and Medical Equipment (ISM Equipment)
Electric tools and heating appliances
Audio and video equipment (television, sound system)
Switching power supply, charger, adapter

⚠️  Exception:

Products sold only in New Zealand that comply with NZ regulations
Equipment not designed or sold for the Australia New Zealand market
Certain special exemption equipment (such as three-phase industrial equipment)

3、 Product classification and certification requirements (three-level management system)

The Australian EMC system categorizes products into three types based on electromagnetic interference risk, with certification requirements gradually increasing:

categoryinterference levelrepresentative productCertification requirements
‌Level 1‌low interferenceManual switch, simple relay, resistorSuppliers sign a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) and provide product descriptions; Voluntary application for C-Tick logo
‌Level 2‌Medium to high interferenceSwitching power supply, dimmer, most household appliancesIn addition to DoC, test reports that comply with AS/NZS standards must be provided; If there are no standards, technical documents need to be submitted
‌Level 3‌high interferenceIndustrial equipment, medical instruments, welding machinesA test report must be issued by a recognized laboratory and a Quality Management System (QMS) certificate must be provided

📌  Important reminder: Level 2 and 3 products must complete registration and apply for the use of the C-Tick logo before sales.

4、 C-Tick Certification Core Process (4 Steps)

Confirm product category and applicable standards
Determine whether the product falls within the regulatory scope and select corresponding standards, such as:

AS/NZS CISPR 32 (Multimedia Devices)
AS/NZS CISPR 15 (Lighting Equipment)
AS/NZS 61000 series (universal EMC standard)

Conduct EMC testing
Conduct the following key tests in a qualified laboratory (such as NATA accredited):

Conducted Emissions
Radiated Emissions
Electrostatic Discharge Immunity (ESD)
Electric Fast Transient (EFT), etc

Prepare technical documents and compliance statements
Must include:

Test report (issued by a third-party laboratory)
Product technical documentation (circuit diagram, BOM, user manual)
Supplier Declaration of Conformity (DoC): must be signed by a local company in Australia or New Zealand
Production Consistency Control Instructions (to ensure that batch products comply with test samples)

Add C-Tick logo and information identification

Logo format: C-tick+supplier code (e.g. C-tick N12345)
Must be marked in a prominent position on the product body or packaging
Please indicate next to it:

Registered name and address of Australian supplier
Company Registration Number (ACN)
Supplier number issued by ACMA

5、 Certification cycle and cost

Cycle: Typically 1-6 weeks, depending on product complexity and number of testing items
Cost: mainly composed of testing fees, document review fees, and agency service fees. Level 2 products generally range from RMB 5000 to RMB 15000
