Climate environment testing - Xenon lamp aging test

Xenon lamp aging test is an environmental testing method that simulates full spectrum sunlight, mainly used to evaluate the weather resistance and aging performance of materials under comprehensive factors such as sunlight, temperature, and humidity. Xenon lamps can simulate ultraviolet, visible, and infrared rays in sunlight, making them closer to real environments than simple ultraviolet testing. They are widely used in industries such as coatings, plastics, rubber, and textiles.

Test purpose

Evaluate weather resistance: Test the degree of aging of materials under simulated sunlight exposure.

Predicting lifespan: By conducting accelerated aging tests, predict the service life of products under outdoor exposure.

Material optimization: according to the test results, the material formula is improved to improve its anti-aging performance.

Test Principle

The xenon lamp aging test uses a xenon lamp as a light source to simulate the full spectrum of sunlight (including ultraviolet, visible, and infrared), and combines environmental factors such as temperature and humidity to accelerate the aging process of materials. Simulate climate conditions in different regions and seasons by controlling light intensity, temperature, and humidity.

test conditions

Light source: Xenon lamp, typically with a spectral range of 290 nm to 800 nm, covering ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light.

Radiation intensity: typically ranging from 0.35 W/m ² to 1.20 W/m ² (measured at 340 nm or 420 nm), adjusted according to testing standards or product requirements.

Temperature:

Blackboard temperature: usually 50 ° C to 90 ° C, simulating the surface temperature of the material.

Internal temperature: usually between 40 ° C and 70 ° C, simulating ambient temperature.

Humidity: The relative humidity is usually between 10% and 75%, simulating aging in a humid environment.

Spray cycle: Spray cycle can be set to simulate the impact of rainwater on materials.

Testing cycle: Depending on product requirements, it usually ranges from several hundred hours to several thousand hours.

Test steps

Sample preparation: Select representative samples, clean and record the initial state.

Test setup: Set parameters such as irradiation intensity, temperature, humidity, and spray cycle according to standards or requirements.

Start testing: Place the sample into a xenon lamp aging test chamber, start the equipment, and begin irradiation.

Periodic inspection: Regularly take out samples and check for changes in appearance, color, gloss, mechanical properties, etc.

Test completion: After reaching the predetermined time, take out the sample and conduct the final evaluation.

Data analysis: Compare the data before and after testing to evaluate the weather resistance and aging degree of the material.

Application field

Coatings and Coatings: Evaluate the fading, powdering, cracking, and other properties of paints, coatings, etc. under sunlight exposure.

Plastic and rubber: Test the aging, brittleness, discoloration, etc. of plastic and rubber products under sunlight.

Textiles: Evaluate the UV resistance and color stability of outdoor textiles.

Automotive industry: Testing the weather resistance of automotive exterior components such as bumpers, headlights, and interior materials.

Building materials: Evaluate the durability of building materials (such as doors, windows, and roof materials) under sunlight.

test equipment

Xenon lamp aging test chamber: provides controllable full spectrum illumination, temperature, and humidity environment.

Irradiance meter: used to measure light intensity.

Color difference meter: used to measure the color change of materials.

Glossmeter: used to measure changes in surface gloss of materials.

Common standards

ASTM G155: Xenon Lamp Exposure Test Standard for Non Metallic Materials.

ISO 4892: Plastic laboratory light source exposure methods.

GB/T 1865: Chinese National Standard, Artificial Climate Aging and Artificial Radiation Exposure for Paints and Varnishes.

SAE J2527: Xenon Lamp Aging Test Standard for Automotive Exterior Materials.

Precautions

Sample selection: Ensure that the sample is representative and avoid deviation in test results.

Parameter setting: Set reasonable testing conditions based on the actual usage environment of the product.

Data recording: Detailed recording of various data during the testing process for subsequent analysis.

The xenon lamp aging test can effectively evaluate the weather resistance of materials in simulated solar environments, providing scientific basis for product design and material selection.
