Climatic environment testing - IP level (waterproof and dustproof test)

Ingress Protection Rating is an international standard used to evaluate the protective ability of electrical equipment, electronic components, or enclosures against solid foreign objects (such as dust) and liquids (such as water). The IP rating consists of two numbers, representing the protection ability against solid foreign objects and liquids. IP level testing is widely used in fields such as electronic products, lighting equipment, and industrial equipment.

The meaning of IP level

The IP rating consists of two numbers in the format IPXX:

The first number (0-6):

Indicates the level of protection against solid foreign objects (such as dust).

The second number (0-9):

Indicates the level of protection against liquids (such as water).

Specific definition of IP level

The first number: Dust proof level (solid foreign object protection)

levelProtection Capability Description
0Without protection
1Protect solid foreign objects with a diameter of ≥ 50mm (such as hands)
2Protect solid foreign objects with a diameter of ≥ 12.5mm (such as fingers)
3Protect solid foreign objects with a diameter of ≥ 2.5mm (such as tools, wires)
4Protect solid foreign objects with a diameter of ≥ 1mm (such as small tools, wires)
5Dust prevention (not completely preventing dust from entering, but the amount of dust entering is not enough to affect equipment operation)
6Completely dust-proof (no dust entering)

Second digit: Waterproof rating (liquid protection)

levelProtection Capability Description
0Without protection
1Protect against vertical dripping (such as condensation)
2Protection against tilted 15 ° dripping water
3Protective spray water (such as rainwater)
4Protection against splashing water (such as water splashing)
5Protective spray water (such as faucet spray)
6Protect against strong jet water (such as waves)
7Protection against short-term immersion in water (e.g. 1 meter depth, 30 minutes)
8Protection against prolonged immersion in water (e.g. water depth of over 1 meter, continuous immersion)
9Protect against high-pressure and high-temperature spray water (such as high-pressure cleaning)

Steps for IP Level Testing

Sample preparation:

Ensure that the sample meets the testing requirements and record the initial performance data.

Select testing level:

Select the appropriate IP rating based on product design requirements and application scenarios.

Dustproof test:

Use standard dust (such as talcum powder) to test the sample and detect the entry of solid foreign objects.

Waterproof test:

Use standard water sources (such as drip, spray, immersion, etc.) to test the sample and detect the entry of liquids.

Observation and recording:

During or after the testing process, observe the protective performance of the sample and record the data.

Result evaluation:

Evaluate the protection level of the sample according to the testing standards and determine its IP level.

Application of IP Level Testing

electronic product:

Test the waterproof and dustproof performance of electronic products such as mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches.

lighting:

Evaluate the protective capabilities of outdoor lighting fixtures, industrial lighting equipment, etc.

Industrial equipment:

Test the protective performance of industrial control equipment, sensors, etc. in harsh environments.

Automotive industry:

Evaluate the reliability of automotive electronic devices, headlights, etc. in rainy and dusty environments.

Household Electric Appliances:

Test the waterproof and dustproof performance of household appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.

Instruments for IP level testing

Common IP level testing instruments include:

Dust proof test chamber:

Used to simulate dust environments and test the dust resistance of samples.

Waterproof testing equipment:

Including drip test device, spray test device, immersion test device, etc., used to test the waterproof performance of samples.

Notes on IP Level Testing

Sample selection:

The sample should be representative and avoid selecting areas with defects or unevenness.

Test conditions:

Strictly follow the testing standards to set parameters such as dust concentration, water pressure, and water temperature.

Environmental control:

The testing environment should maintain a constant temperature and humidity to avoid affecting the test results.

Security protection:

During the testing process, protective equipment should be worn to prevent dust or water from causing harm to operators.

summary

IP rating testing is an important method for evaluating the protective ability of electrical equipment, electronic components, or enclosures against solid foreign objects and liquids, by simulating dust and water environments to test their protective performance. It has a wide range of applications in electronic products, lighting equipment, industrial equipment, automotive industry and other fields, and is a key testing project to ensure product quality and reliability.
