Limit of harmful substances in China GB 6675 series, phthalates, and toy coatings

GB6675 is the toy safety requirement for the Chinese market. It specifies the basic safety requirements, implementation and supervision, legal responsibilities, etc. for toys. The basic safety requirements include mechanical and physical properties, flammability, chemical properties, electrical properties, hygiene requirements, radiation performance, and labeling requirements.

Suitable for toys designed or intended for children under 14 years old to play with, as well as products not specifically designed for play but with play functions for children under 14 years old.

GB6675 is a series of toy safety standards, including the following parts:
·The basic specification (GB6675.1) also includes requirements for phthalates.
·General requirements, including but not limited to mechanical and physical properties (GB6675.2), flammability properties (GB6675.3), and migration of specific elements (GB6675.4);
·Specific requirements refer to requirements specific to a particular product. The safety requirements for electric toys are GB19865.

Overview of GB 6675 series standards
GB 6675 is a series of standards for toy safety, mainly including the following parts:

1. Basic specifications (GB 6675.1)
Scope of application: Suitable for all toys designed or intended for children under 14 years old.

Basic requirements:

Basic principles and general requirements for toy safety have been established.

Including restrictions on phthalate plasticizers such as DEHP, DBP, BBP, etc.

Identification requirements:

Toys must be labeled with appropriate age ranges, warning signs, and instructions for use.

2. General requirements
Mechanical and Physical Properties (GB 6675.2):

Small parts: prevent small parts from falling off and causing children to accidentally swallow them.

Sharp edges and tips: Ensure that the toy has no sharp edges or tips.

Rope and elastic components: limit the design of rope length and elastic components.

Other mechanical hazards, such as folding mechanisms, springs, etc., must ensure their safety.

Flammability performance (GB 6675.3):

Conduct combustion testing on toy materials to ensure they are non flammable or have a safe burning rate.

Specific materials, such as plush toys and makeup clothing, must meet additional combustion performance requirements.

Migration of specific elements (GB 6675.4):

Limit the migration of 8 heavy metals (antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium).

Testing method: Use simulated saliva, gastric juice and other liquids for migration testing.

3. Specific requirements
Safety requirements for electric toys (GB 19865):

Applicable to electric toys, it specifies requirements for electrical performance, insulation performance, temperature rise, etc.

Similar to the international standard IEC 62115.

Other specific product requirements:

There may be additional safety requirements for specific types of toys, such as catapult toys, chemical experiment toys, etc.

Scope of Application
Applicable products:

Design or reserve toys for children under 14 years old to play with.

Non specially designed toys with play functions (such as stationery, decorations, etc.).

Not applicable to products:

Specially designed for children or adults aged 14 and above.

Products without play function.

Main testing items
Mechanical and physical performance testing:

Small component testing.

Sharp edge and tip testing.

Rope and elastic component testing.

Combustion performance test:

Material burning rate test.

Burning performance testing of specific materials (such as plush toys).

Chemical performance testing:

Heavy metal migration test (8 elements).

Testing of phthalate plasticizers.

Electrical performance testing (applicable to electric toys):

Insulation performance testing.

Temperature rise test.

Identification check:

Compliance check of age labels, warning labels, and usage instructions.

Comparison with other standards
In accordance with EU EN 71:

Similarities: The requirements for mechanical and physical properties, combustion performance, and heavy metal migration are similar.

Difference: GB 6675 imposes stricter restrictions on phthalates.

Compared to ASTM F963 in the United States:

Similarities: The heavy metal migration testing method is similar.

Difference: GB 6675 has more detailed requirements for labeling and instructions.

How to meet the requirements of GB 6675
Product Design:

Ensure that the product design meets the requirements of mechanical and combustion performance.

Material selection:

Choose materials that comply with heavy metal migration and phthalate ester restrictions.

Test certification:

Conduct testing in an accredited laboratory to ensure that the product meets all requirements.

Identification and instruction manual:

Provide Chinese age labels, warning labels, and usage instructions.

Technical documents:

Prepare technical documents (including design drawings, material lists, test reports, etc.).

summary
GB 6675 is the core standard for toy safety in the Chinese market, covering mechanical and physical properties, combustion performance, chemical performance, electrical performance, hygiene requirements, radiation performance, and labeling requirements. Toy products exported to China must comply with the requirements of GB 6675 and pass relevant tests and certifications.
