Introduction to Photobiological Safety Testing Report

Photobiosafety testing mainly measures wideband light and calculates the response time, angle, sensitivity, and other aspects of human eyes and skin to light.

Photobiological Safety Testing Standards

IEC62471: International standard for the assessment and control of photobiohazards in the wavelength range of 200 nanometers to 3000 nanometers. EN62471: European standard for the assessment and control of photobiohazards in the wavelength range of 180 nanometers to 3000 nanometers.

GB/T 20145: Chinese standard for the assessment and control of photobiohazards caused by optical radiation in the wavelength range of 200 to 3000 nanometers.

The photobiological safety testing standard is an international standard for evaluating the potential harm of light sources to human skin and eyes, mainly based on standards such as IEC 62471, EN 62471, and GB/T 20145. The following are the core points:

1、 Standard system and scope of application
IEC 62471: International standard, covering wavelengths of 200-3000nm, suitable for non laser light sources such as LED and fluorescent lamps.
EN 62471: European standard with a wider wavelength range (180-3000nm), with differences in wavelength and limit values compared to IEC 62471:2006.
GB/T 20145: China adopts IEC 62471:2006, which is applicable to ultraviolet lamps, lasers, etc.

2、 Test content and hazard classification
Standard assessment of 8 types of light radiation risks, including UV hazards, blue light hazards, etc. The hazard level is divided into:

RG0 (Exemption Level): No harm.
RG1 (Low Hazard): Normal use with no risk.
RG2 (moderate hazard): Short term exposure may cause harm.
RG3 (high hazard): Immediate exposure requires protection.

3、 Testing methods and equipment
Adopting a dual monochromator spectral radiometer, supporting detection in the 200-3000nm wavelength range. The testing distance is usually 200mm, and the field of view angle is 0.011 radians.

4、 Standard updates and applications
IEC 62471 has been updated to the 2008 edition, while GB/T 20145-2006 remains valid. LED lighting fixtures need to be evaluated according to IEC 62471, and some products must comply with IEC 62471-7:2023.

Classification of photobiological hazard levels

Class 0 hazard (no hazard), no photobiohazard

Class 1 hazard (low hazard): Under normal exposure conditions, the light has no biological hazard

Class 2 hazard (moderate hazard) - the lamp does not produce photobiohazards that are sensitive to strong light and temperature discomfort. Class 3 hazard (high hazard): momentary radiation can cause photobiohazards

Photobiological Safety Testing Laboratory

LCS Detection's Photobiological Laboratory has introduced the Hangzhou Far East OST-300 Photobiological Safety Measurement System and HAAS-2000 Spectrometer The wavelength range is 200nm-2550nm, fully covering the UV visible infrared wavelengths required by the standard. The system uses a dual monochromator as the spectrometer, and the spectral resolution is more than ten times that of ordinary spectrometers. In addition, the Hangzhou Yuanfang PMS-2000 optical biosafety measurement system has been introduced, which can accurately and quickly measure surface emitting LED light sources with uneven brightness. By combining the above two systems, we can provide testing services such as IEC/EN62471 photobiological safety and IEC/TR62778 blue light hazard for a wide range of lighting manufacturers.
