ball pressure

Insulation materials that support dangerous voltages or have anti electric shock effects need to undergo ball pressure testing to ensure that the insulation material can still perform its intended function at high temperatures. The test temperature is the highest temperature plus 25 ℃, but not less than 125 ℃ (for supporting dangerous voltage) or 75 ℃ (for preventing electric shock). The ball pressure time is maintained at the required temperature for 1 hour.

Ball Pressure Test is an experimental method for evaluating the deformation resistance of insulation materials under high temperature conditions. It is mainly used to support insulation materials with dangerous voltages or to prevent electric shock, ensuring that they can maintain structural stability and insulation performance even when working at high temperatures. The following is a detailed explanation of the ball pressure test:

Test Principle
Apply a certain pressure (such as 20N) to the surface of the insulation material with a standard steel ball (usually 5mm in diameter) at a specific temperature and maintain it for a period of time (such as 1 hour). Evaluate the deformation resistance of materials at high temperatures by measuring the indentation diameter on their surface.

Test Standard
Common ball pressure testing standards include:

IEC 60695-10-2: International Electrotechnical Commission standard, applicable to the evaluation of insulation materials for electronic and electrical products.

GB/T 5169.21: Chinese National Standard, equivalent to IEC 60695-10-2.

UL 746A: Underwriters Laboratories standard for evaluating the heat resistance of plastic materials.

test equipment
Steel ball:

A standard steel ball with a diameter of 5mm.

Heating device:

Used to heat the sample to the specified temperature.

Pressure device:

Apply standard pressure (such as 20N).

Measurement tool:

Used for measuring indentation diameter (such as microscope or vernier caliper).

Test steps
Sample preparation:

Prepare standard sized samples, ensuring their surfaces are smooth and defect free.

The sample needs to be pre treated under standard temperature and humidity conditions.

Set temperature:

Set the testing temperature according to the material usage:

Supporting insulation materials with hazardous voltage: maximum working temperature plus 25 ℃, but not lower than 125 ℃.

Insulation material for preventing electric shock: The maximum working temperature is 25 ℃, but not lower than 75 ℃.

Heating the sample:

Place the sample in the heating device, heat it to the set temperature and maintain stability.

Apply pressure:

Place the steel ball on the surface of the sample, apply the specified pressure (such as 20N), and maintain it for 1 hour.

Cooling and measurement:

After removing the pressure, cool the sample to room temperature.

Measure the indentation diameter using a measuring tool.

Result evaluation:

Determine whether the material is qualified based on the indentation diameter (usually the indentation diameter should not exceed 2mm).

result evaluation
According to the test results, evaluating the deformation resistance of materials usually includes the following indicators:

Indentation diameter: The indentation diameter shall not exceed 2mm, otherwise the material is unqualified.

Appearance inspection: Observe whether there are cracks, deformations, and other defects on the surface of the sample.

Test points
Temperature control: Ensure accurate and stable temperature of the heating device.

Pressure control: The applied pressure should meet the standard requirements (such as 20N).

Environmental control: Testing should be conducted under standard temperature and humidity conditions.

Measurement accuracy: Use high-precision measurement tools to ensure accurate data.

application
Lamp industry: Evaluate the deformation resistance of lamp shells, internal insulation materials, etc. under high temperature conditions.

Electronic and electrical industry: testing the heat resistance of components such as circuit boards, connectors, switches, etc.

Automotive industry: Evaluating the heat resistance of materials in automotive electrical systems.

Through ball pressure testing, the deformation resistance of insulation materials under high temperature conditions can be effectively evaluated, ensuring that they can still provide the necessary insulation and protection during high temperature operation.
