Medical Electrical Equipment

The testing of medical electrical equipment and medical electrical systems (such as endoscopes, power adapters for transfer equipment, etc.) is key to ensuring their safe and reliable operation in medical environments. Due to their direct or indirect contact with patients, these devices have stricter safety and performance requirements than ordinary electrical equipment. The following are the key points for testing medical electrical equipment:

1. Testing standards
The testing of medical electrical equipment is usually based on the following international standards:

IEC 60601-1: General requirements for the basic safety and essential performance of medical electrical equipment.

IEC 60601-1-2: Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements.

IEC 60601-1-6: Usability requirements.

IEC 60601-2: Special requirements for specific medical equipment (such as endoscopes, power adapters, etc.).

Other regional standards:

ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1 (USA).

GB 9706.1 (China, equivalent to IEC 60601-1).

2. Electrical safety testing
Leakage current test:

Measure patient leakage current, shell leakage current, and ground leakage current to ensure they are within safe limits (e.g. IEC 60601-1).

Voltage withstand test:

Verify the withstand voltage performance of the insulation material of the equipment under high voltage (such as 1500V AC, 1 minute).

Grounding resistance test:

Ensure that the resistance value between the grounding terminal and the grounding metal component is sufficiently low (usually not exceeding 0.1 Ω).

Power adapter testing:

Verify whether the input power, output voltage, efficiency, and temperature rise of the power adapter meet the requirements.

3. Mechanical safety testing
Structural strength test:

Ensure that the equipment casing and internal structure have sufficient mechanical strength to withstand mechanical stress during normal use and transportation.

Testing of moving parts:

Test the moving parts (such as the adjustment mechanism of the endoscope) to ensure that they do not cause harm to the patient or operator.

Stability testing:

Ensure that the device does not tilt or slide when tilted or subjected to external forces.

4. Thermal safety testing
Temperature rise test:

Run the equipment at rated load, measure the temperature rise of each component (such as power adapter, motor), and ensure that it does not exceed the limit specified by the standard.

Overheating protection test:

Verify whether the overheating protection devices of the equipment (such as temperature switches and thermal fuses) can effectively operate in abnormal situations.

5. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing
Radiation emission test:

Measure the electromagnetic radiation generated by the measuring equipment during operation to ensure that it does not exceed the limits specified in the standard (such as IEC 60601-1-2).

Immunity test:

Verify the performance stability of the equipment in electromagnetic interference environments, including tests such as electrostatic discharge, radio frequency interference, and rapid transients.

6. Environmental testing
Temperature and humidity test:

Verify the performance stability of the device under different temperature and humidity conditions.

Vibration and impact testing:

Ensure that the equipment can withstand vibration and impact during transportation and use.

7. Special equipment testing
Endoscopic testing:

Verify its optical performance, mechanical performance, and electrical safety.

Power adapter testing:

Verify whether its input power, output voltage, efficiency, and temperature rise meet the requirements.

8. Certification and Compliance
CE certification: Complies with the EU Medical Device Directive (such as MDR).

FDA certification: Meets the requirements of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

NMPA certification: Complies with the requirements of the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) of China.

Summary: The testing of medical electrical equipment and medical electrical systems covers multiple aspects such as electrical safety, mechanical safety, thermal safety, electromagnetic compatibility, usability, biocompatibility, etc., to ensure their safety and reliability in medical environments. Through rigorous testing and certification, the risk of equipment to patients and operators can be minimized to the greatest extent possible.
