Color tolerance test

Color tolerance is the correction deviation between the color coordinates of a light source and a standard reference light source.

Color tolerance is an indicator used to quantify the difference between the color of a light source and a standard reference light source, typically represented by SDCM (Standard Deviation of Color Matching). The following is a detailed explanation of color tolerance testing:

1. Definition of Color Tolerance
Color tolerance refers to the deviation between the color coordinates of a light source and the standard reference light source color coordinates, usually described by the MacAdam ellipse. One SDCM represents color differences that are difficult for the human eye to perceive, while three SDCMs or less are generally considered acceptable.

2. Calculation of color tolerance
Color tolerance is determined by calculating the distance between the color coordinates of the light source and the standard reference light source in the CIE chromaticity diagram

Measure the color coordinates of the light source: Use a spectral radiometer or colorimeter to measure the color coordinates (x, y or u ', v') of the light source.

Determine the standard reference light source color coordinates: Determine the reference color coordinates based on the standard light source (such as D65, D50) or the target color temperature.

Calculate color coordinate deviation: Calculate the distance between the color coordinates of the light source and the reference color coordinates in the CIE chromaticity diagram.

Convert to SDCM: Convert color coordinate deviation to SDCM values based on the size of the MacAdam ellipse.

3. MacAdam's ellipse
The MacAdam ellipse is an area in the CIE chromaticity diagram that represents the range of human perception of color differences

One SDCM represents color differences that are difficult for the human eye to perceive.

Within 3 SDCMs is generally considered acceptable.

More than 5 SDCMs indicate significant color differences.

4. Color tolerance testing method
Color tolerance testing usually uses a spectral radiometer or colorimeter, and the steps are as follows:

Measurement of light source spectrum: Use a spectral radiometer to measure the spectral radiation flux of the light source.

Calculate color coordinates: Calculate the color coordinates (x, y or u ', v') of the light source based on spectral data.

Determine reference color coordinates: Determine the reference color coordinates based on the standard light source or target color temperature.

Calculate color tolerance: Calculate the deviation between the color coordinates of the light source and the reference color coordinates, and convert it into SDCM values.

5. Application of Color Tolerance Testing
Color quality control: used to evaluate the color consistency of light sources or displays.

Lighting Design: Help designers choose light sources with consistent colors.

Standard compliance: Used to verify whether the product complies with color standards (such as ANSI C78.377).

6. Factors affecting color tolerance
Light source spectrum: Light sources with different spectral distributions have different color coordinates.

Measurement equipment: The accuracy of a spectral radiometer or colorimeter can affect the test results.

Environmental temperature: Temperature can affect the spectral distribution of the light source, thereby affecting color tolerance.

7. The relationship between color tolerance and color temperature
Small color tolerance: indicates that the color of the light source is close to the standard reference light source color.

Large color tolerance: indicates a significant difference between the color of the light source and the standard reference light source color.

8. Precautions for Color Tolerance Testing

Calibration equipment: Before testing, it is necessary to calibrate the spectral radiometer or colorimeter.

Standard observation conditions: The test should be conducted under standard observation conditions to avoid external light interference.

Multi point measurement: Measure color coordinates at multiple locations to gain a comprehensive understanding of color distribution.

Through color tolerance testing, the difference between the color of the light source and the standard reference light source color can be accurately evaluated, providing a scientific basis for color quality control and lighting design.
