The safety standards for household appliances have undergone a major update, particularly strengthening the safety requirements for refrigeration equipment such as refrigerators and freezers, including mobile devices, RVs, and marine applications! 1. The scope of application has been greatly expanded, and various device specifications have been added
The ninth edition of IEC 60335-2-24 in 2025 directly replaces the eighth edition in 2020. The new version of the standard has significantly expanded its scope of application, adding regulatory requirements for mobile refrigeration equipment, leisure accommodation vehicles (such as RVs), leisure vessels, and equipment used on ships. At the same time, it still covers compression type household refrigeration equipment that uses flammable refrigerants.
Complete analysis of 2 key technical requirements
Electrical safety covers rated voltage and 24V DC battery operation; Add exception test 19.106; Stability and specialized testing for mobile devices (mechanical strength, Appendix FF ship applications, etc.).
Flammable refrigerant safety no longer directly refers to clause 22.7, but clarifies flammability parameters through Table 102, and manufacturers are required to provide complete safety information and usage instructions.
New clauses for mobile and special environment applications: 7.1/7.6/7.12/7.14 Marking and Instructions, 19.103 Abnormal Operation Test, 21.101 Mechanical Strength, 24.3 Component Requirements; Appendix FF covers ship applications.
3 Testing Methods and Verification Requirements
Routine testing: Appendix A provides informative routine testing guidance to assist manufacturers in establishing effective production line testing procedures.
Motor aging test: Appendix C specifies the motor aging test method to ensure the long-term safety of motor use.
Thermal Motor Protector: Appendix D provides testing and evaluation requirements for thermal motor protectors to ensure effective overheat protection.
Tropical Climate Applications: Appendix P provides application guidance for equipment used under tropical climate conditions, considering the impact of high temperature and high humidity environments on equipment safety.
4 Development Trend Analysis
Application of environmentally friendly refrigerants: With the increasing global environmental requirements, the use of low GWP but potentially flammable refrigerants has become a trend.
Mobility and portability: The mobile refrigeration equipment market is growing rapidly, ensuring the safety of mobile usage scenarios.
Energy diversification: The standard considers multiple energy sources (power grid, battery, gas, etc.) for power supply equipment.
