The Causes and Understanding of Harmonic Current

When the input voltage of the device is a sine wave, and the input load of this voltage is a nonlinear circuit, it will cause distortion of the input current, that is, the input current is not a sine wave. According to the Fourier transform, non sine wave signals will have harmonics in the frequency domain, which will reduce the efficiency of the device's power supply and pollute the power grid. Harmonics refer to the amount of electricity present in a current with a frequency that is an integer multiple of the fundamental wave. In fact, harmonics themselves do not exist, they are just the equivalent waveform of the distorted waveform after Fourier decomposition.

Exemption requirements (according to IEC 61000-3-2)

1. Equipment with a nominal voltage less than 220VAC;

2. DC power supply equipment;

3. Lighting equipment with input power<5W;

4. Equipment with a rated power of ≤ 75W (excluding lighting equipment);

5. Professional equipment with a total rated power greater than 1kW;

6. Symmetrical control heating elements with active input power less than or equal to 200W;

7. Independent phase control dimmer

When used for incandescent lamps, the rated power shall not exceed 1kW;

When used for lighting equipment other than incandescent lamps, for rear edge dimmers and universal phase controlled dimmers with default mode set to rear edge, the rated power shall not exceed 200W;

When used for lighting equipment other than incandescent lamps, for front edge dimmers and general-purpose phase controlled dimmers that have not set the default mode to the rear edge, the rated power shall not exceed 100W.

IEC 61000-3-2 Equipment Classification

1.Class A:

Devices not designated as Class B, C, or D should be classified as Class A devices, such as multimedia, household appliances, independent phase controlled dimmers, audio equipment, stage lighting equipment, and studio professional lighting fixtures.

2. Class B: Portable tools, arc welding equipment that does not belong to specialized equipment;

3. Class C: Lighting equipment;

4. Class D: Devices with power less than or equal to 600W, personal computers and personal computer displays, television receivers, refrigerators and freezers with one or more variable speed drives to control compressor motors;

Lighting Equipment Description: The following are Class C lighting equipment:

(1) Light sources, lighting fixtures, integrated lighting fixtures, and lighting fixtures;

(2) The lighting part of a multifunctional device, one of its main functions is lighting;

(3) Independent lighting control device;

(4) Ultraviolet and infrared radiation equipment;

(5) Lighting advertising signs;

(6) Independent dimmer for lighting equipment (excluding phase control type);

(7) DLT control device

The following are not considered lighting equipment (measured using CLASS A):

(1) Lighting fixtures installed in equipment with other primary purposes, such as photocopiers, projectors, and projectors, or used for proportional lighting or indicating purposes;

(2) Independent phase controlled dimmer;

(3) Stage lighting fixtures and professional lighting fixtures for studios, such as film and television lights, flashlights, etc. (with specified usage scenarios);

(4) Emergency lighting fixtures that only emit light in emergency mode;

(5) The main function is to display professional lighting equipment for exhibitions, such as counter display lights;

Limit requirements for Class C equipment

Testing requirements for lighting equipment with a wattage greater than or equal to 5W and less than or equal to 25W (any one of three is sufficient):

(1) Harmonic current shall not exceed the power related limits in column 2 of Table 3;

(2) Expressed as a percentage of fundamental current:

The third harmonic current shall not exceed 86%;

The fifth harmonic current shall not exceed 61%;

The waveform of the current should reach the 5% current threshold before or at 60 ° C; Cannot decrease below the current threshold before 90 degrees.

Reached maximum peak before 65 ° C;

The current threshold is equal to 5% of the highest peak value that occurs during the measurement period;

(3) THD shall not exceed 70%.

Expressed as a percentage of the fundamental current, the 3rd harmonic current should not exceed 35%, the 5th harmonic current should not exceed 25%, the 7th harmonic current should not exceed 30%, the 9th and 11th harmonic currents should not exceed 20%, and the 2nd harmonic current should not exceed 5%.

Requirements for testing over 25W:

(1) All lighting equipment with a rated power greater than 25W should not exceed the limit values required in Table 2 of IEC 61000-3-2 for the input current subharmonics;

(2) For equipment with control measures (such as dimming, RGB color adjustment, etc.), it should be tested under the following two conditions, and the harmonics under both conditions should not exceed the limit value calculated in Table 2 of IEC 61000-3-2 for the maximum active input power (Pmax) condition (the limit value for the second test is the same);

Set the control device to Pmax power;

Set the control device to generate the maximum total harmonic current (THC) within the active input power range [Pmin, Pmax], where:
