In the process of supply chain management, product admission, or customer factory inspection, it is often heard that the other party requests: "Please provide the IEC 60998 test report for the wiring terminals (connecting devices). ”For many enterprises, this is both a compliance threshold and a key to technology validation. This article will break down the connotation, scope of application, and key points for handling this standard for you.

1、 Core understanding: What is IEC 60998-1?

IEC 60998-1 is a general safety standard for "low voltage circuit connecting devices for household and similar purposes". It does not exist in isolation, but must be used in conjunction with the specific 'Part 2'.

Universality: Part 1 specifies the basic safety requirements for all connected devices.

Differentiation: Part 2 specifies targeted testing criteria based on connection methods such as screw type, push wire type, twist connection type, etc.

Domestic correspondence: The corresponding national standard in China is GB 13140.1, and its technical requirements are highly consistent with international standards.

Special reminder: Before submitting for inspection, it is important to clarify which structure your product belongs to, so that the laboratory can match the correct Part 2 standards for testing.

2、 Scope of application: Is your product listed?

This standard mainly applies to independent connecting devices with rated voltage not exceeding AC 1000V (frequency ≤ 1000Hz) or DC 1500V, and used for connecting copper wires (cross-sectional area 0.2mm ² to 35mm ²).

Common applicable products:

Various types of terminal blocks and wiring harnesses;

Push wire quick connector;

Twisted connection cap;

Connect the connectors inside the box.

Attention: Industrial connectors (such as those within the scope of IEC 61984 standard) or connection devices that require special tools to operate are generally not applicable to this standard. If unsure, it is recommended to consult a professional laboratory for product classification before sending for inspection.

3、 Overview of Key Testing Items

The testing logic of IEC 60998 is very rigorous, mainly covering the following dimensions:

Electrical safety: including insulation resistance, electrical strength (withstand voltage test), creepage distance, and electrical clearance. This is the core of ensuring that the product does not have the risk of short circuit or electric shock when it is live.

Mechanical performance: Focus on testing the reliability, drop resistance, and mechanical strength of the clamped wire to ensure a stable connection.

Temperature rise and heat resistance: Test the temperature rise at rated current and conduct a ball pressure test to ensure that the insulation material will not deform or fail at high temperatures.

Fire prevention and environmental resistance: including hot wire test (fire prevention), leakage and trace resistance test (moisture and dirt resistance), and durability test of identification.

4、 Process: from preparation to certificate collection

To avoid taking detours, it is recommended to follow the following steps:

Requirement confirmation: Clarify whether the customer's requirement is for a "third-party testing report" or a "certification certificate (such as CQC, TUV, etc.)".

Data preparation: Prepare product specifications, structural diagrams, Bill of Materials (BOM), and nameplate samples.

Plan evaluation: Communicate with the laboratory about product structure, determine specific testing items and standard versions.

Sample testing: Submit samples for laboratory testing. If there are any non-conforming items, they need to be rectified and retested according to the report.

Certificate application: If certification is required, after the laboratory completes the testing, the certification body will conduct subsequent factory audits and certification processes.

5、 Guide to Avoiding Pits: How to Choose a Testing Institution?

When choosing a collaborative laboratory, please pay attention to the following points:

Qualification verification: Do not only check whether there is a CNAS mark, but also check the CNAS accreditation scope attachment to confirm whether it includes IEC 60998-1 and corresponding Part 2 projects.

Report recognition: If your target market is Europe or a specific large customer, you need to confirm whether the report issued by the laboratory is recognized by the target organization (such as TUV, UL, etc.).

Material compliance: The grade and fire rating of the insulation material have a significant impact on the test results. Please ensure that the material certification documents are complete before sending for inspection.

Integrity of the plan: Beware of institutions that only quote based on Part 1, and ensure that the plan covers the specialized testing of Part 2 to avoid additional testing costs in the future.
